What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the Opera del Duomo Museum for its insightful historical context and stunning original artworks, especially sculptures by Giovanni Pisano. Many highlight the rooftop cafe as a peaceful spot with incredible views of the Leaning Tower, a welcome respite from the crowds. Some note that it might be less engaging for those not interested in religious history.
"I read before ariving to Pisa that it is a good idea to visit museum first before anything else on Piazza del Duomo. And boy was I glad I followed it.
The Museo dell'Opera del Duomo was one of the best museums I've ever visited. It’s modern and perfectly showcases the rich history of the 12th to 14th centuries. Walking through it felt like stepping back in time, with incredible original artworks and sculptures displayed in a way that really brings the medieval and early Renaissance period to life.
You get to meet all the great artists of those time, especially Giovanni Pisano, genious of Pisa. Love what he get out of stone."

"I visited the museum after the cathedral and other buildings but it would be better to start your tour here. It gives a detailed insight in to the design, history and architecture of each building and it houses many original statues too fragile to stay outside. This gives you an opportunity to see detail not visible from ground level.
It is very well laid out and presented and in the foyer there is a screen showing the development of the whole site as a timeline that helps to place it all in context.
On the upper floor is a lovely terrace cafe with terrific views to the tower and cathedral."

"I regretted not having more time here! They have reliquary of saints!!!! It’s a Catholic museum, if you not into church history it might be boring for you, but for a devout Catholic like myself it’s a treasure!!"
