What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Forte Stella is praised for its incredibly affordable entry fee and stunning panoramic views of Portoferraio and the sea. Visitors appreciate the authentic, lived-in atmosphere of the inhabited fort. However, a significant drawback is the inconsistent and often inaccurate opening hours, leading to disappointment for some.
"Don't understand the bad reviews. 2€ entry and you get an authentic experience with the best views on the city!!"
Jiří Müller
"For €2 per person, you can visit the private area. Beautiful views of the bays, the Medici Fort, and the city."
Frank Barthen
"Inhabited…
We thought we were entering a fort like Forte Falcone, but we were a bit disappointed because we were wandering among the houses, like in a normal village alleyway, with no signage. It's certainly worth a visit, but having already seen Forte Falcone, with its wonderful 360° panoramic views, this one, which is similar but inhabited, didn't exactly excite us. Obviously, these are just personal opinions and impressions. The entrance fee is €2; who knows!!!!!!"

👨👩👧 Families with Kids
While there aren't specific playgrounds or child-focused activities, the panoramic views are generally captivating for all ages. Navigating Forte Stella's Hours
This unpredictability can be a significant drawback for day-trippers or those with tight schedules. Some visitors have tried multiple times over different years without success. While the low entry fee of around €2 makes it an attractive option, the hassle of potentially missing out due to inaccurate hours is a recurring theme in reviews. Planning your visit for earlier in the day or being flexible with your itinerary is advisable.
Despite these challenges, those who manage to visit often praise the authentic experience and the stunning views. The fort's unique star shape and its position overlooking the city and sea make it a memorable stop, provided you can navigate the access issues.
The Charm of an Inhabited Fort
This inhabited nature means there isn't always clear signage directing you through the fort, and it can feel more like exploring a historic neighborhood than a traditional museum. Some reviewers found this lack of explicit direction a bit disappointing compared to more structured forts like Forte Falcone, which offers more expansive, unobstructed views. However, for others, this aspect adds to the intimate and genuine feel of Forte Stella, allowing for a more personal discovery of the site.
It's important to be respectful of the residents while exploring. The experience is less about grand historical exhibits and more about appreciating the seamless integration of history and community. The stunning sea views from its ramparts remain a major draw, offering a beautiful backdrop to this unique living history.
