Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about Prato Piazza's stunning natural beauty and panoramic views, especially from Strudelkopf. It's praised as a peaceful escape, ideal for hiking and photography. However, some find the cross-country ski tracks are not groomed frequently enough for the number of users, and car access restrictions during peak summer hours can be inconvenient.

"We read that cars can drive in outside of high season, which starts on 10 July. On 7 July, we arrived shortly before 10am, but the car park higher up was full and we couldn't enter. The queue for the bus was so long that we wouldn't make it on the next one. Cars are not allowed in between 10am and 3pm at all. We returned at 3pm and could go up and park with no problem. It's amazingly beautiful"

Asiya M

"Absolutely stunning place for cross country skiing however one should be aware they only make the track every two days. This is clearly insufficient given the amount of people using it daily. It’s a pity because a poor track prevents good skiers from enjoying it fully and puts beginners in difficulty"

Fabio Punk

"Beautiful Plato with spectacular views! Best to come with bicycle."

The Strudelkopf (Monte Specie) Hike

For many visitors, the highlight of a trip to Prato Piazza is the hike to Strudelkopf, also known as Monte Specie. This relatively family-friendly trail, approximately 10 km round-trip, leads you to an altitude of 2,307 meters. The ascent is manageable, and the reward is immense: breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views of the surrounding Dolomite giants. Instagram

From the summit, you can clearly see iconic peaks such as the Drei Zinnen (Three Peaks), Monte Cristallo, and the Cadini group, all part of the UNESCO World Heritage site. Understanding Access and Timing

From early July, private cars are restricted from driving up to the plateau between 10 AM and 3 PM. This measure is in place to manage traffic and preserve the natural environment. Reddit

If you plan to drive, it's best to arrive early in the morning (before 10 AM) or later in the afternoon (after 3 PM) when access is permitted. The car park at the top can fill up quickly, so arriving outside these peak times increases your chances of parking. Alternatively, a bus service is available, but be prepared for potentially long queues during busy periods. Visiting during the shoulder seasons, like May or September, can offer a more relaxed experience with fewer access concerns. Reddit+1
