Reviews Summary

Visitors are consistently impressed by the unique Byzantine Baptistery, calling it a hidden gem and a significant piece of Calabrian history. The ancient columns and faint frescoes add to its allure, and the village of Santa Severina itself is praised for its charm and historical atmosphere. While the site is less known than it deserves, the experience is often enhanced by passionate local guides.

"Fun fact: I discovered this place thanks to a guide who, while visiting Capo Colonna, directed me to see the jewel of Hera, the golden diodem, housed in the Archaeological Museum of Crotone. Here, the local guide recommended the village of Santa Severina, which I had never seen before.
A truly beautiful discovery, both the village, the castle, and the baptistery are truly worth a visit. The baptistery is a unique piece of history: dating back to the Byzantine era, it preserves the signs of various eras and dominations, including the Arabs. The baptistery is a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage status. It has eight columns, each different from the others in size, materials used, capitals, and vaults... It is the oldest monument still in use in Calabria and the only example of an oval-shaped Byzantine baptistery in Italy!
Originally, it was entirely frescoed, and some frescoes are still visible today...
Thanks also to the guide Daniela, who passionately illustrated and explained everything to us.
Santa Severina: a true Italian and Calabrian gem waiting to be discovered. Unfortunately, it's still too little known for the beauty it holds. A virtual hug to Calabria, which deserves to be increasingly appreciated!"

Rodolfo Calligari

"Simply beautiful .... This small baptistery from the outside does not attract much attention from passers-by, half hidden as it is in a corner of the upper square, at the northern end of the Cathedral of Santa Severina. However, it is the most important testimony of Byzantine art in Calabria together with the more famous Cattolica of Stilo. Its interior in fact exudes a harmonious and simple beauty that, despite the absence of the ancient frescoes now disappeared, strikes the most attentive visitor. It has a circular plan, with four short protruding arms in the shape of a Greek cross. The 8 columns that support the dome are all recycled materials from other sites (and it shows). Austere and evocative overall. The visit (check the times) costs 1.50 euros and we were accompanied by a nice young woman who briefly told us the history of the monument."

Daniele Musso

"By purchasing a cumulative ticket for a modest sum at the nearby Diocesan Museum, it is possible to take advantage of a guided tour with trained volunteer staff both at this little gem and at the nearby Church of Santa Filomena."
