What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Royal Castle Sarre for its elegant 18th-century decor, insightful guided tours, and stunning valley views. The historical significance as a Savoy family hunting lodge is a key draw, though the extensive ibex trophy collection elicits mixed reactions due to its historical context. Some find the castle smaller than expected, but its charm and the surrounding scenery are consistently appreciated.
"Royal hunting palace for the last few centuries, evolution through time but originally on foundations dating back to about 1200. The most important rooms are decorated with roe deer and ibex horns and busts. The royal inhabitants principally loved eating these meats most. Guided tour so reservations are recommended. FAI members have a 2 eur discount."
Monica Widman
"The royal family's hunting lodge, according to the guide, was used for about two months of the year, but it helped the locals survive in difficult times, as they had to work hard to open about 300 kilometers of safe roads to allow the king to travel between base camps to hunt.
The first floor houses royal objects and the second is a museum with ibex and chamois trophies. Interestingly, electricity and heating were installed around the house for the comfort of the family.
Dogs allowed in a carrier.
Large groups on weekends, book in advance.
We recommend purchasing one of the many Valle d'Aosta Cards to visit all the sites and castles."

"Excellent castle to learn about the Savoy family. One room contains the most ibex and chamois antlers and is interesting to see."
