What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Guests rave about the Grand Hotel Villa Balbi's stunning historical architecture and prime seaside location, often likening it to a museum experience. However, some visitors note that services like beach access and amenities can be costly, and minor issues like mosquitoes and a lack of ironing facilities detract from an otherwise elegant stay.
"Very nice and classy hotel on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea. The building has a lot of character and authentic details, very nice atmosphere. Very friendly and helpful staff. Rooms are nice and well equipped, made us feel very welcome. The electric box near the door however was humming pretty loudly. Breakfast buffet was very nice, large choice, pleasant outside seating available. Parking is available in the grounds of the hotel at € 15 per night. The hotel is facing the sea and has its own beach. It just a short walk to the pedestrian zone of Sestri Levante and it's many shops and restaurants. The train station is about a 10 minute walk away, from there it's easy to visit Cinque Terre."

"The building in which the hotel located is just stunning - as far as I reckon , it dates back to 17th century , and there are so many nice pieces of art inside - the pictures , the statutes , the pieces of furniture.
The breakfast is decent , but there is nothing special .
The biggest disappointment is the service : and it is not about personnel - they are very helpful and nice people, but about fact that the hotel offers very expensive beach , at the price of EUR 50 per day per couple , even outside high season and also they don’t offer even beach towels for free - you need to pay 5 EUR per towel per person .
Also , given fairly high rates for the room , this is daylight robbery .
The last nail in the coffin is the absence of ironing facilities- there is no ironing room, they don’t offer an ironer and a board etc . The staff claim it’s due to fire safety - the building is old and has a cultural and historic value , but it is still not good .
The worst thing is that the hotel does not place ANY warnings about the above on their official website- you only find it out at arrival ."

"The villa is beautiful, but servicesl could be improved. The hotel didn’t acknowledge a birthday during our stay, which was disappointing. Breakfast was simple and lacked variety. At the pool area had no cushions, and towels were available only for rent at reception. There was no poolside bar or water services. While the setting is charming, the service and facilities did not match the property’s potential."
