Visitors consistently praise Taurasi wine country for its exceptional wines, particularly the Aglianico-based reds, and the immersive winery experiences that often include historical tours and delicious food pairings. The scenic mountain drives and charming towns add to the overall appeal, making it a highly recommended destination for wine enthusiasts and travelers seeking authentic Italian culture.
"Alessia Canarino gave me a few options and I decided to go with Cantine Antonio Caggiano. The drive is beautiful. Nestled in the mountains of Taurasi. We started off with a tour of the facilities, admiring local art and photography, working our way through the beautiful wine cellar of amazing architectural design around every turn. Such great craftsmen ship everywhere you look displaying old wine bottles, current wine bottles and barrels. Next, we walked through a museum area showcasing tools and items used thought the years. Followed by a tour of the production areas and seeing the machines that make it all happen. The tour was one to remember. After our tour we had a break in between, while waiting for our meal and tastings. During your break you can walk up to the local town and explore a castle with a museum and take a lovely walk about the town. Lastly, the wine of course and the meal. We started off with a light and delicious rosé accompanied by appetizers, a crisp white wine with first plates, and red wine with second plates and dessert. The wines have strong taste with lingering effect, I loved them all so much we took home one of each. The meal was wonderful and well paired with each wine. We both loved everything about our visit and plan to visit again. If you’re up for the drive it is very well worth it. I highly recommend Cantine Antonio Caggiano!"

"Wowwww wow wow!!! This is a castle, museum and best winery in Campagnia region for sure. When you arrive inside you are amazed with design and beauty! When you proceed dowstairs you are thrilled with wine culture, exibits, family memories and history… when you enter the Cellar, it’s more like cathedral with plenty of its own history, its own soul and memory. We were simply amazed by the tour, winery, details and so sweet welcome!
The wines here are really the best from the region! If you decide where to go in Campagnia, do not waste your time, simply book in advace and come to Caggiano!!! This family winery is definitely the king here!!
We have visited different ones in the area, however none could compete with wine quality, spectacular cellar, beautiful atmosphere.
Thank you very much for such kind welcome, it was so nice and pleasant to visit you! I wish you top rewards and to obtain best wine of Italy price again! Your Taurasi riserve really deserves it!!!!!"

🚇 🗺️ Getting There
The most common way to reach Taurasi wine country is by car, offering a scenic drive through the Campania mountains. From Naples, it's approximately a 1.5 to 2-hour drive. Renting a car provides the most flexibility to explore multiple wineries and towns. Public transport options are limited and can be time-consuming, often requiring multiple changes.
While challenging, it's possible. You could hire a private driver or join a guided tour from Naples or Salerno. Public transport involves buses, but schedules can be infrequent and connections difficult, making it less ideal for a comprehensive winery visit.
The drive itself is part of the experience. Major routes involve heading east from Naples towards Avellino, then following signs for Taurasi. The roads are generally well-maintained, but can be winding as you ascend into the hills. Enjoy the picturesque landscapes along the way.
Most wineries, especially larger ones like Cantine Antonio Caggiano, offer dedicated parking for visitors. It's advisable to check with your specific winery in advance if you have any concerns about parking, particularly during peak season.
The drive from Salerno to Taurasi is slightly shorter than from Naples, typically around 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on traffic and the specific route taken. This makes Salerno a convenient base for day trips to the wine region.
🎫 🎫 Tickets & Entry
Yes, booking in advance is highly recommended, especially for popular wineries like Cantine Antonio Caggiano. Many visitors report that tours and tastings can sell out, particularly on weekends or during peak tourist seasons. Booking ensures you secure a spot and can plan your itinerary effectively.
Costs can vary depending on the winery and the tasting experience offered. Expect to pay anywhere from €20 to €50 or more per person for a tasting, which may include a selection of wines and sometimes light appetizers. Some premium experiences with food pairings will be higher.
Winery hours can differ, but generally, they are open for tours and tastings from mid-morning to late afternoon, often closing around 5 or 6 PM. It's crucial to check the specific hours for each winery you plan to visit, as some may have specific days they are closed or require appointments outside of standard hours.
While exploring the towns of Taurasi is generally free, there might be an entrance fee for specific attractions like the castle museum. These fees are usually modest and contribute to the upkeep of historical sites. It's best to check locally or on the town's official tourism website for current pricing.
While some smaller, less-visited wineries might accommodate walk-ins, it's not advisable. For a guaranteed and enjoyable experience, especially at well-regarded estates, making a reservation is essential. This also allows the winery to prepare adequately for your visit.
🎫 🧭 Onsite Experience
A comprehensive winery tour and tasting experience in Taurasi can last anywhere from 1.5 to 3 hours. This often includes a guided walk through the vineyards (if applicable), cellars, production areas, a museum, and the tasting session itself, sometimes accompanied by food.
Comfortable shoes are a must, as you'll be doing a lot of walking, often on uneven surfaces or cobblestones. Dress in layers, as cellars can be cooler than the outside temperature. Smart casual attire is generally appropriate for tastings and meals.

Taurasi wines, particularly the Aglianico-based reds, are robust and pair exceptionally well with rich meat dishes, game, and aged cheeses.
