The Franciscan friar Bernardino Caimi, upon his return from Jerusalem at the end of the 15th century, wanted to reproduce its holy sites on a smaller scale: the Grotto of Bethlehem, Golgotha, etc. At the summit of the complex stands the Basilica of the Assunta.
