What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Zattere Promenade for its beautiful, expansive views of the Giudecca Canal and its role as a perfect spot for sunset. It's appreciated for offering a more relaxed atmosphere compared to central Venice, ideal for leisurely strolls and enjoying gelato. Some note that food quality can be inconsistent, and it can get crowded during peak times.
"My review concerns the Zattere promenade, not the waterbus station.
Once a landing dock for timber carrying rafts ('zattere'), essential for building Venetian ships and structures, the quay is now a favorite local spot for strolling. Especially on sunny afternoons, locals promenade the nearly 2 km stretch, sharing laughs, exchanging news and gossip and enjoying gelato. You may feel more like an observer than a participant, but that's all part of the experience.
Sunsets from the Zattere are spectacular!
As sunset approaches, find the perfect spot by the water to enjoy an aperitivo, relaxed by the gentle flow of boats along the Giudecca Canal."

"One of the most ancient area of Venice. In the past, river boats used this quay to offloads coal, wood, salt and other goods and in the recent years was used by small cruise vessel and super yachts while calling Venice."

"Decent canal side bars cafe and restaurants.... Nice and not too busy"

The Zattere Promenade Experience
Along the Zattere, you'll encounter a variety of establishments, from charming cafes and artisanal gelaterias to restaurants serving traditional Venetian cuisine. It's a popular place to enjoy an 'aperitivo' – a pre-dinner drink accompanied by small snacks – while taking in the expansive views. The promenade also serves as a gateway to exploring the Dorsoduro district further, known for its art galleries and quieter residential streets.
Many visitors appreciate the Zattere for its open vistas and the sense of space it provides, a welcome contrast to the often-crowded narrow alleys of Venice. The promenade is particularly stunning during sunset, when the sky ignites with color, reflecting beautifully on the water. It’s a place where you can truly feel the rhythm of Venetian life, away from the main tourist throngs.
Navigating Venice: Vaporetto and Walking
Walking is an essential part of the Venetian experience, and the Zattere is a prime example of a pleasant walking route. From the train station, a Vaporetto ride along the Giudecca Canal offers a scenic introduction. Alternatively, walking from areas like St. Mark's Square takes about 20-30 minutes and allows you to discover hidden courtyards and charming bridges along the way.
While some travelers note that Venice can be overwhelming, embracing the Vaporetto and enjoying walks are key to navigating it. For instance, exploring the narrowest street, Calle Varisco, or the unique Ponte Chiodo (a bridge without handrails) requires walking and a keen eye for detail, often found in less-trafficked areas.
