I’m a resident of Japan. Please tell some interesting, lesser known spots for a 10 day trip.

My company just decided to tell me that I have to use 5 days of nenkyu or it’ll vanish by the first of August, so, I’ll be free from the 19th-28th of July. I live in Japan, I’ve been to 30 prefectures, I speak the language. I’m tired of Tokyo, and I’ve been to all the…

Reviews Summary

Visitors find the Amami City Museum of History and Folklore to be an informative and quaint spot to learn about the island's history, people, and nature. While some exhibits are primarily in Japanese, translation apps are highly effective. The affordable entry and the accessible outdoor traditional house are frequently praised, though concerns have been raised about the welfare of live turtles on display.

"Highly recommended to learn about history, people, and nature of the island. First floor has good video programs; select English subtitles, then the video you wish to see. A detailed relief model of the island on the first floor is great for planning. First floor exhibits focus on life by the sea, second floor is about history and culture, third floor focuses on nature. Most labels are only in Japanese, so Google Lens is handy to translate. You can also pick up an English map of the island. And there are outside exhibits of a traditional house and storage shelters. Open daily except closed 3rd Monday of month and 28 December-1 January. Individual adult admission is 310 yen."

"This is a very cute little museum. Overall, it’s not very extravagant but if you do wanna learn more about the island and the culture, then I do recommend going here. There are multiple levels in the museum who are allowed to take pictures and videos. Honestly, I just thought it was pretty nice. It’s quaint and not very touristy"

Yazmina Salahuddin-Robinson

"Small museum but the exhibits are nice. There is English signage that cover the basics. They have a couple of interactive displays too which is fun.

Be sure to explore the traditional house on the other side of the lawn. It's worth a look. (Technically you can look at this for free without visiting the museum.)"
