What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the magical beachfront experience, especially swimming with turtles and the exceptional quality of the sushi. The island's natural beauty and the friendly staff are frequently highlighted as positives. However, some find the hotel amenities a bit dated and note that English proficiency is limited, which can be a challenge for some international travelers.
"Accomodation was great, everyone is kind and cheerful. Location is fantastic, swiming with turtles and fish on the beach in front of the hotel is magical. Dinner was the best I had throughout my trip in japan, best sushi ever. 5 stars is not enough to describe the amazing time I had here while on my honeymoon."

"We arrived from Tokyo at the end of a typhoon, it was touch and go if we could land or not, we were the first plane to land for some days. Understandably the hotel was in a bit of a state, ie, no electricity, swimming pool full of sand and many palm trees ripped out of the ground. Some buildings had been damaged. There was no electricity on the whole Island .The hotel restaurant had been flooded so was closed when we arrived but it opened after a couple of days. This is a very nice hotel, the staff are very helpful and friendly. English language is sparse, my wife has a little Japanese. The restaurant is decorated in tropical style and the food is very good, Japanese and Western. The hotel is situated on a beautiful beach with a dive shop and watersports centre. The staff and contractors were hard at work repairing the beach, vegetation and trees . There is a small shop on site. This is a japanese style hotel as almost all visitors are from the Japanese mainland The rooms are quite small with western type beds , a toilet and shower cubical. I think most westerners would say the hotel was a little bit tired. There is a new ,modern building next door which I think is part of the hotel, its was closed, The onsen type spa and bath is popular with guests. The room rates are good, less than most hotels on the island. We loved the island, lots to see and do, great island museum and a very good art gallery . The weaving workshop and showroom is amazing, its famous in all japan for its astonishing kimono fabric with astronomical prices. Dont miss the Snake display shop !!!. Wonderful beaches , some with cafe's and restaurants and amazing scenery on this mountainous semi tropical island . The weather is good year round. Typhoons common in sep/Oct. We hired a car for the 10 days we were there . Our children and grandchildren live on the island. They recommended this hotel. Date of holiday. October 2018."

Frequently Asked Questions
๐ ๐บ๏ธ Getting There
Access typically involves flying into the island's airport, often from major Japanese cities like Tokyo. Some travelers have experienced flight delays due to typhoons, so flexibility is key. Renting a car upon arrival is highly recommended for exploring the island and reaching Bashayama Park and its surrounding attractions.
While Bashayama Park itself might be walkable depending on your accommodation, exploring the wider island is best done with a rental car. Public transport options are limited, and taxis may not be readily available.
The most common route is to fly from Tokyo to the island's airport. From there, you'll likely need to arrange local transport, with car rental being the most convenient option for reaching Bashayama Park and other island sights.
While flights are the primary mode of transport to the island, ferry services might be available from other islands or mainland Japan, though this is less common and can be a much longer journey. Check specific ferry schedules if this is your preferred method.
Driving is on the left side of the road in Japan. Roads can be narrow and winding, especially in mountainous areas. Be aware of local traffic laws and enjoy the scenic drives.
๐ซ ๐ซ Tickets & Entry
Bashayama Park itself is a natural area, so typically no entry tickets are required. However, specific attractions within or near the park, like museums or cultural workshops, may have admission fees.
As a natural park, Bashayama Park is generally accessible at all times. However, any visitor centers, shops, or specific facilities within the park will have their own operating hours, which can vary seasonally.
Discounts are unlikely for the park itself. However, inquire about package deals if booking accommodation and activities, or look for potential discounts at individual attractions like museums or cultural sites.
For popular activities like the weaving workshop or specific tours, booking in advance is highly recommended, especially during peak season, to secure your spot.
Tickets for most attractions can be purchased on-site. However, for highly sought-after experiences, checking if online booking is available can save you time and guarantee entry.
๐ซ ๐งญ Onsite Experience
Don't miss the stunning beachfront for swimming and snorkeling with turtles, the island museum for local history, and the weaving workshop to see incredible kimono fabrics. The scenic drives around the island are also a highlight.
Yes, the shallow waters and opportunities to see marine life make it great for families. Some accommodations might be more family-oriented, but the natural beauty is universally appealing.
Activities include swimming, snorkeling, diving (at a dive shop), enjoying beachfront dining, exploring local culture at museums and workshops, and scenic drives around the island.
Connectivity can be spotty in more remote areas of the island. While some hotels and restaurants offer Wi-Fi, it's best to be prepared for limited cell service in certain parts of Bashayama Park.
Pack swimwear, reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, comfortable walking shoes, insect repellent, and a light jacket. A translation app and a portable charger are also useful.
๐ฝ๏ธ ๐ฝ๏ธ Food & Dining
The dining experience is a major draw, with many visitors praising the exceptional sushi and fresh seafood, particularly at the beachfront restaurant. Both Japanese and Western options are usually available.
While Japanese cuisine often features vegetable dishes, options for strict vegetarians or vegans might be limited. It's advisable to communicate your dietary needs clearly to restaurant staff, possibly with the help of a translation app.
Fresh sushi and sashimi, especially local catches like lobster, are highly recommended. Don't miss the opportunity to try regional specialties if available.
Yes, there are restaurants, particularly associated with accommodations, offering beachfront dining. Exploring other parts of the island will reveal more dining options, from casual cafes to more formal establishments.
Dining can range from moderately priced meals at local eateries to higher-end experiences at hotel restaurants, especially for seafood specialties. The quality often justifies the cost.
๐ธ ๐ธ Photography
Capture stunning shots of the turquoise waters, vibrant marine life while snorkeling, the lush island landscapes, and the unique architecture of the weaving workshop. Sunrises and sunsets over the ocean are also spectacular.
A waterproof camera or action camera is ideal for underwater shots. For landscapes, a wide-angle lens is great, and a telephoto lens can be useful for wildlife. Don't forget extra batteries and memory cards!
While dedicated photography tours might be rare, you can arrange private guides or simply explore the island yourself to find the most photogenic locations. The natural beauty offers endless opportunities.
The 'golden hours' around sunrise and sunset offer the most dramatic lighting for landscapes. Midday can be harsh, but it's perfect for capturing the vibrant colors of the ocean and marine life.
Drone regulations can vary. It's essential to check local rules and obtain any necessary permits before flying a drone to avoid fines and respect privacy.
