Timing is Key for Aso Views

Kishimadake offers stunning vistas of Mt. Aso's caldera. Check volcanic activity alerts, as access to the main crater can be restricted. Early mornings or late afternoons often provide the best light and fewer crowds for photography and hiking.

Prepare for the Climb

While considered a relatively easy hike, Kishimadake involves a steep set of stairs to reach the summit. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water, especially during warmer months. The loop trail can be uneven, so sturdy footwear is recommended.

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Kishimadake for its breathtaking, rewarding views of the Aso caldera, often described as better than photos can capture. The hike, while involving steep stairs, is considered relatively easy and accessible, with the loop trail offering an extended experience. Some note the weather can be unpredictable, and the climb requires moderate effort.

"The weather wasn't at its best but still, hiking Kishima-dake was a wonderful experience I would like to recommend to everyone. If you have time and energy, please spend at least two days to hike around Aso!"

Kyujin Kim

"This is a must hike in my opinion, the views are better than what the photos can take. It’s a little bit of work getting up there so prepare with water and a few breaks. The stairs are short but steep. You can go up and back down or complete a full loop if you have a little extra time. It’s about 20 minutes to the top if you are fairly fit and the same back down if you return the same way"

Steven Hubert

"Very nice hike. Paved and with steps part of the way, so relatively easy for someone with decent fitness. Once at the top you can do the extra loop around where the ground is a bit uneven, but worth the trip. Great views."
