"Bit of trek to get there from Kamado Shrine ended up on the bus it's a steep hill. Loved the onsen slate rock floors bamboo features big exposed timber beams..3 baths one out in the garden looking at the green foliage...really nice super cheap 400 jpy.."

Cherie L

"I did like this hot springs the most! There was 4 type of bath you can go in, and cost 300 yen. Hot and regular bath, rotten, steam bath. I really enjoyed all of the bath, I wish I could stay longer.

After I visit chijigoku and tastumaki jigoku, I walked up the road for 10-15 mins to get there. Apparently, in between 14:00 to 15:00 is closed for cleaning. I was told by local. After 15:00 was busy.

There was a locker for 100 yen. You’ll need to bring your own towel and amenities."

"Probably the most value for money Onsen in Beppu. For 220 yen you get 3 bath options, steam bath and shower. You need to bring your own towel and soap. You can also buy them at counter.

The area is beautiful and it’s so close to the city. A most come if you are visiting the jigoku nearby.

Nothing or eat in this area though which was unfortunate."

The Beppu Onsen Experience

Beppu is renowned as the 'hot spring capital of Japan,' boasting an incredible diversity of geothermal activity and onsen types. Shibaseki Onsen is a prime example of a more traditional and affordable public bath experience within this vibrant city. Unlike some of the more elaborate or themed onsen resorts, Shibaseki offers a genuine taste of local relaxation. Visitors often come here after exploring the famous Jigoku Meguri (Hell Tour), seeking a soothing soak to end their day. TikTok+1

The city itself is a spectacle of steam rising from vents and hot spring water being utilized in unique ways, from cooking to heating greenhouses. Beppu offers over 2,900 hot spring vents, making it a must-visit for any onsen enthusiast. The sheer volume and variety mean there's an onsen experience for every preference and budget. TikTok

When visiting Beppu, embracing the local onsen culture is paramount. Shibaseki Onsen, with its natural setting and low cost, provides an accessible entry point into this cherished Japanese tradition. It’s a place where you can truly unwind and appreciate the simple pleasures of geothermal bathing. Reddit

Navigating Shibaseki Onsen: Practicalities

Shibaseki Onsen is celebrated for its value, with entry fees typically around 300-400 JPY. This affordability makes it a popular choice for budget-conscious travelers. However, to maximize savings and comfort, it's highly recommended to bring your own towel, shampoo, and body soap. While these items can be purchased on-site, having your own ensures you have your preferred products. Coin lockers are available for a small fee (around 100 JPY) to secure your belongings. Reddit+1

Accessing Shibaseki Onsen involves a bit of a climb. It's situated on a steep hill, so comfortable walking shoes are a must, especially if you're arriving by bus from the main Beppu area or after visiting the nearby Jigoku. For those looking for a more private experience, Shibaseki offers private rooms or family baths. This is a great option for couples or families who prefer not to share the main bathing areas. Remember that hair dryers are available but operate on a coin-in system (30 JPY for 3 minutes), so be prepared if you plan to dry your hair. Reddit
