"A magnificent suspension bridge crossing the Tone River.
The first bridge was completed in 1962, and for a while it was a toll road.
At that time it was a bright red iron bridge, and looked like a twill ladder.
(You can still see traces of it on the Kuji Ohashi Bridge over the Kuji River in Tokai Village, Ibaraki Prefecture.)
From the bridge, you can see the spacious mouth of the Tone River, and the tranquil scenery upstream that connects to Lake Kasumigaura.
If you're lucky, you can see the impressive scene of many small boats fishing for whitebait by lit lanterns before dawn.
When the bridge was still a toll road, it seems that many of the locals owned small cars.
As expected, the toll for small cars was quite cheap.
There was also a ferry service that crossed the river, so you could take a leisurely trip across the Tone River.
After the bridge became toll-free, the number of users decreased and the ferry service was discontinued, so it's a bit disappointing that the fun of crossing the Tone River by boat is no longer available.
When it was the old red bridge, there was no sidewalk, so it was quite dangerous for pedestrians and even difficult for bicycles to cross.
Nowadays, there is a dedicated side road, so you can safely take photos from the bridge."

"Visited on May 17, 2025
I walked and took photos.
The locals must have been very happy when this bridge was built.
I also took photos from Choshi Port."
