"Beautiful old Buddhist temple not far from Enoshima station. The view from the top is absolutely stunning - one side you can see the sparkling ocean, the other side the city. On a clear day you can also get a great view of Fuji-san. There are different levels you can walk up to see the temple, pagoda, cemetery and large gold Buddha. Definitely worth a visit if you like temples and shrines."

"Absolutely beautiful Nichiren temple with a pagoda and a statue of the Buddha donated from India. Buddhist monk and order founder Nichiren was to be put to death by the Kamakura shogunate when lightning saved him, and one of his disciples later build a temple on the spot in 1337. They do a fantastic bamboo lantern lightup the first weekend of August with over 5000 bamboo lanterns. It is conveniently located next to the bus stop and only a short walk from the monorail and Enoden Station."

The History and Significance of Ryuko-ji Temple

Ryuko-ji Temple holds a significant place in Japanese Buddhist history, particularly within the Nichiren sect. Founded in 1337, it commemorates a pivotal moment in the life of Nichiren, the influential Buddhist monk. According to legend, Nichiren was to be executed by the Kamakura shogunate, but a sudden lightning strike intervened, saving his life. A disciple later established this temple on the very spot of this miraculous event, making it a sacred site for followers of Nichiren Buddhism. The temple's architecture reflects its 14th-century origins, with a solemn main hall that evokes a sense of deep history and spiritual contemplation. Reddit

The temple is not just a historical monument but also an active place of worship. Visitors often remark on the peaceful and mysterious atmosphere that pervades the grounds. Beyond the main hall, the temple complex includes a cemetery and, most notably, a pagoda situated on the hills above. This pagoda is not only an architectural marvel but also a vantage point offering stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including the Pacific Ocean. The presence of a large golden Buddha statue, a donation from India, further enhances the temple's spiritual significance and aesthetic appeal. Reddit

Ryuko-ji Temple is also known for its participation in local traditions, such as being part of the '7 Lucky Gods' pilgrimage during New Year's. A particularly enchanting event is the annual bamboo lantern light-up held on the first weekend of August, where over 5,000 bamboo lanterns illuminate the temple grounds, creating a magical and unforgettable experience for visitors. This blend of historical importance, spiritual serenity, and unique cultural events makes Ryuko-ji Temple a compelling destination. Reddit
