It quite far out of the centre of Tokyo to get to. Totally worth it, although it felt a bit weird taking loads of photos as it is a working shrine and there was a big wedding going on while I was there as well as the standard shrine stuff.

"I followed the navigation system and ended up going in from the back, which caused trouble for the priest who happened to be cleaning. I'm sorry. As soon as I parked the car, I remembered. I've been here before. Maybe I was being called. I thanked him again for the connection. The lion statues here are very cute."

"There is a large ginkgo tree at the entrance to the shrine that stands out. It is said to be a sacred tree over 600 years old. This ginkgo tree is a male, so it does not bear ginkgo nuts. Hachinohe Shinmei Shrine is one of the three shrines that take part in the Hachinohe Sansha Taisai Festival. I visited in July, and was lucky enough to see the festival floats being built in a corner of the shrine grounds. The guardian lions guarding the shrine are small in size, but their thick legs make them look agile. The shrine building has a dignified atmosphere that evokes history, and the carvings are intricately detailed."
