Reviews Summary
Visitors find the Kumano Kaido Izumisano to be a historically significant route with intriguing stone monuments, offering a glimpse into ancient pilgrimage paths. While some sections are less maintained, the historical markers provide a tangible connection to the past. The experience is best suited for those interested in local history and a quiet, reflective walk.
"From Kaizuka Shokudo, I head up the mountain from the intersection. So, where is the Kumano Kaido? I make my way around a pond that doesn't seem well-maintained. In cases like this, if you take a suspicious road, you'll hit something. After passing two ponds, sure enough, it looks like it. I come face to face with the stone monument.
The guide-like plate is thin and the light reflects off it, making it hard to read, so I take a photo and decide to read it later.
The stone monument reads, "Origin Marker of Osaka Koraibashi Bridge."
The side also reads, "National Highway or Detour, Kitanakadori Village, Sennan County." The other side is badly damaged, and in part I can only read, "Ichiri Nijūshi."
Oguri Kaido is the local name, and most people refer to it as the Kumano Kaido. Here, in the Asogawa Naka area, there remains something from that time that proves that a milepost like this existed. I'm very happy about that."
