Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Imaicho as a remarkably well-preserved, large-scale historic district that offers an authentic glimpse into Edo-period Japan. Many appreciate the peaceful atmosphere and the fact that it's less crowded than other famous historic towns. Some note that shops close early, which requires planning.

"While Nara prefecture is known to many for her beautiful deer park and exquisite temples I believe her Edo period Imaicho is a hidden gem. This well preserved community is thriving with lived in residents as well as old houses and warehouses that have been renovated tastefully and converted into shops. My sister and I were probably the only foreigners that morning. We were very early, found the tourist information centre and the gentleman in charge literally walked us to this beautiful coffee shop, where we can choose our own coffee cups!! The old fire brigade is now converted into a lovely public toilet. Cool. Imaicho is easily accessible on the Kintetsu rail."

"Just be careful, all the shop would be closed before 5pm"

"Before you set off on your stroll, you'll want to stop by the Imai Machinami Community Center (Hanaka). Be sure to pick up a walking map and gather information beforehand. This stately building, which is sure to captivate you, was once used as an educational museum during the Meiji period, and you can even tour the interior.

This time, we used the Imai Machinami Hiroba Parking Lot. Although we visited on a weekend, it was about 30% empty, and the all-day parking fee was 520 yen.

The townscape is like a time travel back to the Edo period, with important cultural properties open to the public and old-style cafes scattered throughout, making it a great place to stroll and reminisce about the good old days."
