Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Ozenji Kannon-ji for its serene atmosphere, rich history, and beautiful natural surroundings, particularly the unique Zenjimaru persimmon tree. "This is Ozenji Temple, located in Asao Ward, Kawasaki City.
This ancient temple has also witnessed a long history.

Ozenji Temple was founded in 757 (the first year of the Tenpyo-hoji era) during the Nara period.
However, since this is merely legend, the exact founding year is unknown in the broader sense.

The name Ozenji Temple was bestowed upon the temple by Emperor Daigo in 917 (the 17th year of Engi era) during the mid-Heian period.

It was destroyed at the end of the Kamakura period when it was caught up in Nitta Yoshisada's attack on Kamakura, and was rebuilt in 1337.

It seems that the temple was heavily patronized by the Hojo clan during their rule in Odawara.

The Tokugawa family's chrysanthemum crest can be seen on Ozenji Temple today, indicating its strong patronage during the Edo period.

The surrounding area is a satoyama (rural woodland) area with few tourists, making it a quiet and relaxing place that makes it hard to imagine it was caught up in the turmoil of the fall of the Kamakura shogunate.

It's the height of spring now, and the Japanese bush warblers, lesser cuckoos, and rock thrushes are singing beautifully.

It's close to Tokyo, so be sure to drop by for a stroll. It's a truly wonderful temple."

"[Ozenji Temple] Ozenji is a place name that everyone in this area knows, but I think surprisingly few people know that there is a temple called Ozenji here.
I've lived here for over 40 years and never had any interest in it, but when I learned of its existence I decided to visit for the first time.
I was surprised when I visited and saw how impressive the temple is.
Entering through the South Gate in the residential area of Nonaka, you suddenly enter another world rich in nature. There is a small pond with lots of large green turtles. Going further there is the Niomon Gate, and when you get to this point, you forget what residential area you were in before. There is also the original Zenjimaru persimmon tree, and although I knew that Zenjimaru persimmons are a Japanese sweet, I didn't know that the original trees were here.
As soon as you leave from the West Gate you are directly connected to Ozenji Furusato Park."

A Glimpse into Ozenji's Rich History

Ozenji Kannon-ji, officially Hoshiyadoyama Rengezoin Ozenji, boasts a history stretching back to 757 AD during the Nara period. Though its exact founding year is debated, its significance grew immensely, earning it the nickname 'Mount Koya of the East.' The temple faced destruction at the end of the Kamakura period during Nitta Yoshisada's campaigns but was meticulously rebuilt in 1337. Its patronage by powerful clans like the Hojo and the Tokugawa family during the Edo period underscores its historical importance. Reddit

Despite its turbulent past, the temple is now nestled in a peaceful satoyama, a rural woodland area that offers a stark contrast to the historical conflicts it witnessed. This serene environment makes it hard to imagine the temple's involvement in the fall of the Kamakura shogunate. The presence of the Tokugawa family's chrysanthemum crest is a visible reminder of its esteemed status during the Edo era. Reddit

The Zenjimaru Persimmon: A Local Legacy

Ozenji is renowned as the birthplace of Japan's first sweet persimmons, a legacy tied to the original Zenjimaru persimmon tree found on the temple grounds. This ancient tree is so significant that it has been recognized as one of Kanagawa's top 100 trees. Historical records indicate that Dokan Ota, a prominent tactician of the Sengoku period, was presented with persimmons from the Zenjimaru tree during his campaign against Kozukue Castle. Reddit

This unique agricultural heritage adds another layer to the Ozenji experience. While the persimmon trees may not always be in fruit, their historical presence is a key feature of the temple's identity. Visitors can appreciate this connection to Japan's culinary history, understanding how a simple fruit became a celebrated delicacy. Reddit

Nature's Embrace: Satoyama and Wildlife

The area surrounding Ozenji Kannon-ji is a beautiful example of a satoyama, a rural landscape that blends woodland and cultivated areas. This natural setting is a haven for local wildlife, with visitors often reporting the beautiful songs of Japanese bush warblers, lesser cuckoos, and rock thrushes. The tranquil atmosphere makes it an ideal spot for a relaxing stroll and an escape from urban life. Reddit

Adding to the charm is a small pond within the temple grounds, home to numerous large green turtles. This natural element, combined with the lush forests, creates a picturesque environment. The West Gate of the temple provides direct access to Ozenji Furusato Park, further enhancing the opportunities for outdoor enjoyment and nature observation. Reddit
