Reviews Summary

Hikers praise the Kumano Kodo Iseji for its stunning, moss-covered cobblestone paths, particularly the Magose Pass, and the historical charm of its Jizo statues and stone bridges. However, the challenging, slippery terrain and high humidity, especially in summer, require careful preparation and sturdy footwear. Logistical challenges with infrequent bus services also need to be factored into planning.

"Hiked in August 2024. Although a regular hiker of moderate level trails, I found this trail challenging because of the consistent, uneven and slippery rocks combined with a constant significant incline or descent. Good footwear definitely a must, lots of water and a towel - it’s beyond humid this time of year! Don’t miss the Fudo waterfall behind the shrine close to the reentry to Owase city. Not a loop hike! This point to Owase Stn was just under 4km I think (didn’t record but best estimate). Also ramen, karaage and beer at Rairaiken in Owase was the perfect finisher to this hike."

"This is the trailhead for the kumano kodo Magose pass hike if you're entering from Kihoku town side (and going towards Owase city). It is a well marked area and is adjacent to 'Washige' bus stop. A road side station is also nearby (5-10 mins walk) where you can get food and use the washroom."

"Magose Pass is said to be the most beautiful of the Kumano Kodo trails, with its cobblestones and moss-covered path.

There's a parking lot at the trailhead with space for 4.5 cars.

Please note, however, that once you reach the top of this approach, you'll arrive at a place called Owase.

If you're coming by car, you'll probably park at the trailhead, but you'll need to make sure you have a way to get back there.

You'll likely return by bus from Owase, but buses are infrequent and run out by 4 PM, so it's best to check in advance.

Another option is to turn back once you reach the pass.

The usual journey takes between one and a half and two hours.

The cobblestones that I've heard about are indeed beautiful and picturesque, but only in the first half; the rest of the trail is mountain trails.

However, there are many checkpoints, such as Jizo statues and stone bridges, so it's fun to aim for the next step.

The approach is not particularly difficult, making it an easy and enjoyable path, but the cobblestones can be slippery, so proper footwear is recommended."
