Today I was blessed with the rare opportunity of spending time with the proprietor of Umeno, one of the oldest okiya (geisha houses) in Kyoto.✨This is a place you can traditionally only enter by introduction and few foreigners ever set foot inside. I was grateful for an open and generous conversation, and a little peek into this closed and hidden world, as maiko and geiko went about their Saturday...

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the authentic and serene atmosphere of Kamishichiken, highlighting the beauty of the geiko and maiko performances and the traditional architecture. While some find the performances lack English explanations, others appreciate the refined cultural experience and the opportunity for respectful interaction. The district is noted for being less crowded than other geisha areas, offering a more intimate encounter with Kyoto's traditional arts.

"Always an amazing experience! The geiko and maiko are a delight to watch. Performances are entirely in Japanese, but for Kitano Odori the program often includes an English translation of song lyrics and scripts for plays.

The tea service before the dances is lovely when available. However, please be respectful of the rules. They serve many patrons in a very short window, so it’s important everyone move efficiently so that every patron can enjoy the experience before the odori begins."

Sarah

"Fun experience and reasonably price at the beer garden! The food was really good! Nice small plates appropriate for sharing. Pleasant visits from maiko and geiko who have remarkably refined conversational English skills. Nice traditional experience!"

Nancy S

"Many reviewers here seem confused about what exactly is being reviewed. This is the listing for the Geisha performance theatre. The performance I saw here, Kitano Odori, in October 2022, was visually sumptuous and surprisingly musically stirring and rich. That said, it isn’t accessible entertainment: the average ticket is about 5,500 JPY and no explanation is offered for non-Japanese speakers (which makes charging extra for a programme gratuitous, in my view). I still enjoyed the unique aesthetic of it all and trying to determine the thread of the story (of the first show at least; the second one was less narrative-driven from what I could tell). You should try to see a show here at least once if you have an interest in classic Japanese culture; the Geiko-san and Maiko-san are all outstanding performers."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Art of Geiko and Maiko

Kamishichiken is one of Kyoto's most historic geisha districts, or 'hanamachi.' Here, the traditional arts of geiko (Kyoto's term for geisha) and maiko (apprentice geiko) are preserved. These women are highly trained artists, skilled in classical music, dance, conversation, and the art of hospitality. Their performances, like the renowned Kitano Odori, are a testament to years of rigorous training and dedication to preserving Japanese cultural heritage. Instagram+1

While Gion is more widely known, Kamishichiken offers a more serene and perhaps more authentic experience, as it's less frequented by tourists. This allows for a more intimate appreciation of the geiko and maiko's artistry. The performances often include traditional Japanese music and elaborate dances, with programs sometimes offering English translations for non-Japanese speakers. InstagramReddit

Experiencing a private dinner or tea with geiko and maiko is a rare and exclusive opportunity, often requiring introductions or booking through specialized agencies. These encounters offer a unique insight into their refined world and conversational skills, which can include surprisingly adept English. InstagramReddit

Exploring the Kamishichiken District

Wandering through the Kamishichiken district is like stepping back in time. The streets are lined with traditional wooden machiya houses, many of which are ochaya (teahouses) or okiya (geisha residences). The atmosphere is generally more tranquil and less crowded than in other famous geisha districts like Gion, making it ideal for a peaceful stroll. InstagramReddit

The district is particularly beautiful during the plum blossom and cherry blossom seasons, adding a layer of natural beauty to the historic architecture. Reddit While exploring, remember that these are private residences and working establishments. It's crucial to be respectful, avoid intrusive photography, and refrain from disturbing the residents or performers. TikTokInstagram

Kamishichiken is also home to the Kamishichiken Kaburenjo, a theater where traditional dance performances, such as the Kitano Odori, are held. Attending one of these performances is a highlight for many visitors, offering a direct experience of the geiko and maiko's artistic talents. Instagram
