Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Murin-an Garden for its intimate beauty, historical significance, and tranquil atmosphere, often highlighting the peaceful experience due to limited visitor numbers. Some find it a bit pricey for its size, and a few have noted that the 'calming experience' can be disrupted by other visitors' behavior, though this seems to be an occasional issue.

"This intimate yet thoughtfully designed space packs all the essential elements of a traditional Japanese garden into one compact experience. The main tatami-floored viewing room offers comfortable seating where you can enjoy seasonal sweets while contemplating the view.

Step outside to discover their specialty - an exquisite moss garden featuring remarkable biodiversity. The carefully curated varieties create a lush green tapestry that changes character with the seasons.

Photography enthusiasts will appreciate that landscape shots are freely permitted (though portrait photography requires an additional fee). For convenience, tickets can be purchased online or with cash on-site.

This hidden gem beautifully distills the essence of Japanese garden design into an accessible, rewarding visit. The attention to detail in both the architecture and horticulture makes it well worth including in your Kyoto itinerary."

"Pretty garden, not as manicured as most Japanese gardens, interesting history. This is why I gave it only 3 stars- when booking, they stressed that they only allow small groups in so you can have a calming experience and enjoy strolling the garden at your own pace. When we entered, there were at least 12 people waiting and there were at least 20 others milling about. I’m glad we didn’t opt for the tea and sweets as we probably wouldn’t have enjoyed it much with people walking around us, talking into their smartphones while narrating videos, and taking selfies. It is not a large building or garden so it seemed congested to me. I guess that’s to be expected now that Kyoto is one of the biggest tourist destinations in all of Japan. Too bad."

Karen Stafford

"My husband and I visited this hidden garden in June 2023, and it was truly a wonderful experience. We purchased our tickets on-site, which included tea and a cookie—a lovely touch. The place was peaceful and not crowded at all, making it even more enjoyable. We would definitely love to visit again!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The History and Design of Murin-an

Murin-an Garden is a significant site, not just for its beauty but also for its historical context. It was established in the late 19th century as a villa for Yamagata Aritomo, a prominent statesman and former Prime Minister of Japan. The garden itself was designed by Ogawa Jihei, a renowned landscape architect of the Meiji era, who was known for his innovative approach to Japanese garden design. Instagram

The garden is a prime example of a strolling garden (kaiyu-shiki teien), designed to be enjoyed by walking along its paths. A key design principle employed here is 'borrowed scenery' (shakkei), where the garden's boundaries are extended by incorporating the distant views of the Higashiyama Mountains into the overall composition. This technique creates a sense of vastness and harmony with the natural surroundings, making the relatively compact garden feel much larger and more immersive. InstagramReddit

Murin-an also holds historical importance due to the 'Murin-an Conference' held here in 1900, a crucial meeting that shaped Japan's foreign policy. This blend of aesthetic beauty and historical significance makes Murin-an a unique and valuable destination for visitors interested in Japanese culture and history. Reddit

Experiencing the Teahouse and Garden

A visit to Murin-an Garden is incomplete without experiencing its tranquil teahouse. Here, visitors can savor matcha green tea and delicate seasonal sweets (wagashi) while gazing out at the meticulously maintained garden. This offers a moment of quiet reflection and a chance to truly absorb the serene atmosphere. InstagramReddit

The garden itself is a masterpiece of design, featuring a central pond that reflects the surrounding greenery and sky. One of its most captivating elements is the moss garden, which showcases a remarkable diversity of moss species, creating a lush, verdant carpet that changes its character with the seasons. The careful arrangement of rocks, plants, and water features creates a harmonious and calming environment, perfect for a peaceful escape from the bustling city. Reddit

While landscape photography is encouraged, it's important to be mindful of the garden's purpose as a place of tranquility. Visitors are asked to maintain a quiet demeanor, allowing everyone to enjoy the peaceful ambiance. This focus on serenity is what makes Murin-an a truly special place to visit. Reddit+1
