💰 Worth the Entry Fee

The 500 yen entrance fee is a small price for the immense peace and beauty you'll experience. Reddit

Jozan Ishikawa became a hermit and a poet, and retired amongst the manicured gardens of Shisendo, which he constructed after falling out with the Shogun in 1641. The immaculate and intimate gardens, which are far from the maddening crowd, feel more like a home than a temple garden. You walk through the rustic bamboo gates through a rocky path, and the gardens slowly reveal themselves to you, a mom...

Reviews Summary

Shisen-do is widely praised as a top-tier Buddhist temple in Kyoto, particularly for its incredibly beautiful and tranquil gardens. Visitors consistently highlight the peaceful atmosphere, the well-maintained interior with its poetic scrolls, and the overall sense of calm it provides. While some find the no-photography rule inside restrictive, the overwhelming sentiment is that it's a deeply worthwhile and serene experience.

"I've been to maybe 50 Buddhist temples in Kyoto over the past 15 years, and Shisen-do is, IMHO, one of the top five. It's a must-see for the incredible gardens, interior screens, scrolls, and other objects on display inside the temple.

They do not allow photos inside the temple, and there is a particularly wonderful scroll of a Yurei that I was unable to find in their books and postcards for sale, containing the haunting image of a female ghost with wild hair, open mouth and white robe. Edo period I believe, and one of the most wonderful images of a Yurei I've seen. I'd return to Shisen-do just to see this scroll again someday.

This temple is a lovely, warm and welcoming place all-around."

"A nice place with a fantastic garden where you can sit quietly and spend time on nothing but listening to the rain."

"For me it is one of the most beautiful places in Kyoto. I visited him twice this year and it was wonderful. The calm comes to you immediately when you enter this place. I will visit this garden again and again when I come to Kyoto"
