Reviews Summary

Kashiwabara-juku is lauded as a well-maintained, hidden gem that beautifully preserves the atmosphere of an Edo-period post town. Visitors appreciate its tranquil, laid-back ambiance and the opportunity to experience history without overwhelming crowds. While dining options are limited, the local snacks and the charm of the historic streets make it a highly recommended stop for a relaxing and authentic cultural immersion.

"After visiting Tokugen-in Temple, we walked a short stretch of the Nakasendo on the way back to JR Kashiwabara station. We saw the old edo period styled houses along the old road."

"One of the largest post towns in Omi Province
I visited it in early May in 2024 and 2025.
→2024 alone was not enough
This is by no means a major post town, but it has the two-story low-eaves houses and night lights that are unique to post towns, and the atmosphere of the time is better preserved than Sekigahara-juku and Imasu-juku, making it one of the post towns I recommend.
I recommend
First, learn and enjoy the "Yaitou udon" and gohei mochi at the Kashiwabara-juku History Museum and the cafe "Kashiwa" operated in the building, and then walk around Kashiwabara-juku, which is about 1.5 km long.
If the weather is good, you can see Mt. Ibuki along the way.
The overall atmosphere was laid-back and very relaxing."

"Kashiwara-juku is located halfway between Samegai and Sekigahara. With a close view of Mount Ibuki, the atmosphere of a post town remains strong along a long section of the old Nakasendo road."
