Let me show you why climbing Mt. Miyanoura on Yakushima island is one of the best hikes I've ever done. Go there and you'll see the landscapes of the Princess Mononoke movie all around you! Any hikes with movie landscapes you can recommend me in the comments? #yakushima #japantravel

What Travellers Say

Reviews Summary

Visitors are captivated by Miyanoura's artistic welcome, particularly Yayoi Kusama's red pumpkin, and the island's stunning natural beauty, often compared to fantasy worlds. However, some travelers express frustration with ferry logistics, including unclear queuing systems and cash-only policies, which can lead to missed departures. Reddit

"You will be greeted by the red pumpkin artwork of Yayoi Kusama in the port area which is an amazing sight.

No increased ferry schedule during triennale. I waited for two hours in the port so as not to miss the last 5pm ferry. There was no clear signage for where to queue and when to queue. At around 4pm, I saw what seems to be a queue for Uno due to the signage, only to find out it was a queue for Takamatsu, and by the time I joined the queue, it was a long line already. I missed the 5pm ferry but luckily they have a standby ferry that took the 2nd batch of passengers. A bit frustrated and hoping management could improve on this especially during a long weekend or on an event where they expect a huge number of visitors to the Naoshima Island."

Liza G.

"The tickets are not numbered, so the staff keep telling you that boarding is not guaranteed even after you bought them. You have to wait outside, on the docks, but there are two lines and the staff is unable (unwilling) to say which one was the right one. On top of that, there is only one ferry every two hours, old and rusty.
Very bad service, I recommend to look for alternatives."

Matteo Guerrini

"Plenty of seats inside and outside while you are waiting for ferries.
Also a few art works to check out.

Ferry tickets are cash only.
Other goods accepts card payment.

Passenger boat is located a 3-5 min walk from the main building."
