Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Hiyoshi Taisha for its serene atmosphere, beautiful natural setting, and unique architectural features like the triangular torii gate. It's a peaceful escape, especially appreciated for its autumn foliage and less crowded environment compared to popular Kyoto sites. Some reviews mention potential maintenance needs and the challenging climb to the Great Golden Rock.

"Went there as Hinatazaka46 made a trip there for their hit campaign. Grounds were large and a bit confusing. Made up my mind to climb to see the big rock (金大嚴)up on the hill and oh boy was it tough. I rushed through it in around 20 minutes as it was turning dark. Respect to the members who climbed it after dragonboating."

"Hiyoshi Taisha is an old Japanese shrine, and it has a forest-style yard and garden which has numerous old, tall trees for more than several hundred years. In addition, the visitors can see the clean flow of water circulating or flowing through various temples in the Shrine area.

But the Shrine may be in crisis probably due to insufficient fund for the maintenance and repair. For example, most of the tree-bark roofs of the Shrine's worshiping temples are in damaging conditions. Also, a few lion-shaped Guards in front of the worshipping shrines or temples are also in damaged condition.

Visitors who are interested in the Shrine can take the same Keihan commuter train to visit Ishiyama-dera Temple of the Otsu area. Alos, there are various other smaller temples outside Hiyoshi Taisha, between subway station and Shrine's main gate."

Ben Hsu

"Quiet shrine at a much less touristy area to enjoy autumn leaves. Plenty of walking space and very clean toilets.

Definitely a place to visit if you are into Shinto shrine and autumn colours. Y$500 to enter."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The History and Significance of Hiyoshi Taisha

Hiyoshi Taisha boasts a history stretching back over 2,100 years, making it one of Japan's oldest shrines. Founded during the reign of Emperor Sujin, it is dedicated to the deity Hiyoshi Okami, who is associated with water and agriculture. The shrine's influence grew significantly during the Heian period, forging strong ties with powerful samurai clans like the Minamoto and Taira. This historical depth is palpable as you wander through its ancient grounds. InstagramReddit

A unique aspect of Hiyoshi Taisha is its syncretic worship, blending Shinto and Buddhist traditions. This is most evident in its close relationship with Enryaku-ji, a major Buddhist temple on nearby Mount Hiei. This integration reflects a long-standing practice in Japanese religious history. The annual Sanno Matsuri festival in June is a vibrant testament to this enduring spiritual heritage, featuring lively processions and traditional performances. Reddit

Despite its historical importance, some reviews note that the shrine may be facing maintenance challenges due to insufficient funding, with some structures showing signs of wear. However, it remains a significant cultural and historical treasure, offering visitors a glimpse into Japan's enduring spiritual traditions and the harmonious coexistence of Shinto and Buddhist influences. Exploring the Natural Beauty and Seasonal Charm

The presence of numerous ancient, tall trees, some hundreds of years old, contributes to its tranquil and almost mystical ambiance. Visitors often remark on the clean water circulating through the shrine complex, adding to the sense of peace and natural harmony. Reddit

The shrine is particularly renowned for its stunning autumn foliage. During late October and November, the grounds transform into a vibrant spectacle of red, orange, and yellow leaves, drawing visitors seeking seasonal beauty. This makes it a prime destination for enjoying Japan's famed autumn colors, offering a less crowded alternative to some of Kyoto's more popular spots. TikTokInstagram+1

Beyond autumn, Hiyoshi Taisha offers a peaceful retreat throughout the year. Its natural setting provides a refreshing escape, and the seasonal changes offer different visual delights. Whether it's the fresh green of spring or the quiet stillness of winter, the shrine's natural charm remains a significant draw for visitors seeking a serene experience. Instagram

The 'Ghost of Tsushima' Connection

For fans of the popular video game 'Ghost of Tsushima,' Hiyoshi Taisha holds a special significance. The game's developers drew inspiration from the shrine and its surroundings, incorporating elements of its landscape and spiritual atmosphere into the game's world. TikTok

Specifically, the game features a quest that leads players to a location inspired by Hiyoshi Taisha, where they can unlock a legendary bow. This connection has brought a unique layer of interest for gamers visiting the actual shrine, allowing them to experience the real-world inspiration behind their virtual adventures. TikTok

While the game's depiction is a fictionalized interpretation, it highlights the enduring appeal and evocative nature of Hiyoshi Taisha's setting. It's a fascinating intersection of history, spirituality, and modern entertainment, adding another dimension to the visitor experience. TikTok
