Reviews Summary

Shiretoko bear watching cruises are overwhelmingly praised for their incredible wildlife encounters, with many visitors thrilled by sightings of orcas, sperm whales, and porpoises. The knowledgeable and friendly crew, along with the stunning natural scenery, contribute to an unforgettable experience. Some minor dislikes include the potential for cancellations due to weather and the language barrier for non-Japanese speakers, though efforts are made to accommodate.

"I went on the cruise on 5th July. Amazing experience. Booked online and they will call/email you a day before to confirm that the boat will be sailing out.

On sailing day, we went to the office to make payment before heading to the pier.

The sea was very calm and we had the upper deck, which was quite nice! Right off the bat we saw some Dall’s porpoises!

During the entire trip, the crew was very friendly, and knowledgeable. They shared about the wildlife one can see in the summer months in Japanese, and also provided written explanation in English. This was very useful! One of the crew even went to an English-speaking family with kids after the whole explanation to show the kids the different whales they might get to see, even despite language barrier! That was amazing to see.

All in all, this trip we saw Dall’s porpoises, orca (!!!), a sperm whale, and another whale which I couldn’t make out what it was but it was magnificent nonetheless.

Excellent cruise and I recommend this to all who want to experience wildlife on their own terms."

"We had an excellent time on the 2 hour sea ice boat tour to see the Steller's Sea and White Tailed Eagles. They circle the boat around a number of times so that you can see the eagles from every angle (sun/lighting). There was literally hundreds of eagles. At some points, you can be as close as 10 feet from them. We actually got extremely lucky regarding the day we booked the tour, because the bay was clear of ice. The next day, the sea was filled with ice as far as we could see, making it impassable to boats. Highly recommend if you are in Rausu in winter."

Brennen Ott

"Excellent cruise out of Rausa. Porpoises, killer whales were plenty in July. The Sperm whale took a little effort to find but we eventually were able to see two!!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Understanding Shiretoko's Wildlife

The Shiretoko Peninsula, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is renowned for its rich biodiversity. The waters of the Sea of Okhotsk and Nemuro Strait are feeding grounds for a variety of marine mammals. During the summer months, orcas (killer whales) are frequently sighted, often hunting in pods. Sperm whales, the largest toothed whales, are also a significant draw, especially towards the end of their season. Dall's porpoises are a common and energetic sight, often seen playing near the boats. TikTokReddit+1

Beyond marine life, the Shiretoko area is also home to brown bears. While bear watching cruises primarily focus on marine animals, there's always a chance of spotting bears along the rugged coastline, particularly during certain times of the year. In winter, the landscape transforms, and the cruises shift focus to the magnificent Steller's sea eagles, which gather in large numbers to fish in the ice-covered waters. TikTok

It's important to remember that wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. The success of a cruise depends heavily on the season, weather conditions, and the natural behavior of the animals. However, the experienced guides and the stunning natural environment of Shiretoko significantly increase your chances of an unforgettable encounter. Reddit

Choosing Your Cruise Operator

Several companies operate bear and whale watching cruises from Rausu and Utoro. While they all aim to provide a similar experience, there can be differences in boat size, amenities, and the specific areas they cover. It's advisable to research a few operators, read recent reviews, and compare prices and tour durations. Some popular operators in Rausu include Gojiraiwa Kanko and Rausu Shiretoko Kanko. TikTok+2

When booking, pay attention to the type of boat offered. Some are larger and more stable, which can be beneficial in choppier seas, while smaller boats might offer a more intimate experience. The crew's knowledge and communication skills are also crucial. Many reviews highlight the friendliness and expertise of the guides, who often provide information in both Japanese and English, enhancing the visitor experience. Reddit

Remember to confirm your booking details and understand the cancellation policy, especially since weather can be unpredictable. Operators typically confirm sailing status the day before, so staying in contact is key. Reddit
