"Sengoku Period Mountain Castle

Like Hachioji Castle and Oji Castle, this castle was one of the subsidiary castles of the Later Hojo clan, whose base was Odawara Castle.

It was also known as a border castle due to its location on the border with Kai Province, and is said to have played an important role.

Like Hachioji Castle, there is a Negoya (a small house) and Oshuden (main hall) at the base of the castle.

All that remains today are the remains of moats and other structures, with no stone walls or other features.

I was completely caught off guard because it was located within a park, but it's best to think of it as a hike (mountain climbing).

I wasn't confident in my stamina, so I chose Onnazaka. The slope was gentle, but the trail was well-maintained and narrow in places, running along cliffs, so it took quite a while. On the other hand, Otokozaka may be steep, but the path is well-maintained and there were no dangerous spots, so I made it down the mountain in no time. I recommend Otokozaka for those lightly dressed.

There is ample parking, and there is a park center and clean restrooms just before the park.

If you're visiting for the castle, I recommend gathering information about the castle at the park center beforehand.

This mountain castle was built by the Chikui clan, a branch of the Miura clan, a powerful clan on the Miura Peninsula, during the Kamakura period from the 12th to 14th centuries. This was a key transportation hub connecting Kai Province in Yamanashi Prefecture and Sagami Province in Kanagawa Prefecture, and during the Sengoku period in particular, the Hojo clan and Takeda clan, who ruled the area, fought many battles here. In 1590, the castle surrendered and was abandoned after Toyotomi Hideyoshi's Odawara Conquest. Today, no buildings remain to recall those days, and only man-made structures called "horikiri" remain as a reminder that this was a mountain castle. There is a free parking lot nearby, and a wooden deck that goes around the base of the castle. The mountain path leading to the top of the castle is steep and rugged, with the "Otokozaka" (men's slope) being easy to climb with light equipment, but the gentler "Onnazaka" (women's slope) being difficult to climb without mountain climbing equipment. It takes just under an hour to reach the top, and along the way there are giant hornets, mountain leeches, and the most dangerous "wild boars," and you should be careful that large branches may fall on you due to the decay of the trees. At the top of the mountain, there is overgrown grass, wooden chairs, tables, an observation deck, and a stone monument built in 1818. There is a toilet, but it is not a flush toilet. There is a clean toilet attached to the wooden deck at the base that is well maintained. It will take about two hours to go around. (Note that in the past, people have almost gotten lost on the mountain path, so you should refrain from climbing after 3 p.m. There are rare plants and animals, but they should not be collected.)"
