Reviews Summary

Horomi Pass offers stunning lavender fields and panoramic city views, especially in July. However, visitors should be prepared for significant transportation challenges due to limited public access and heavy traffic, as well as very basic restroom facilities. It's best suited for a short visit focused on photography and enjoying the scenery.

"It just a garden of lavender, no ticket, but it was so beautiful. I visited here on weekend and it was crowded at the field (but still manageable) but it’s so difficult to get here. There is no public transportation at all so everyone use their own car or taxi, so the traffic was crazy. I can only go 100m after 10 min drive. So almost take 1,5 hour to go to the place even it was only 1,3km from bottom roads. There’s only one toilet and also two additional portable toilets here but it was so dirty, water not running and clogged with tissue 🥴

I hope there will be more proper toilet, and behave tourist.

There’s no shop as well unless a seed shop that sell lavender seed. So it’s only for pictures and short sightseeing."

"A lovely viewpoint over Sapporo. In August, the lavender was already cut, so no lilac blooms, but otherwise nice."

Karin R

"The drive up to the small farm is steep. One need to pay 500yen per vehicle to enter. Will not recommend if you are already visiting the big farms such as Farm Tomito."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Lavender Experience

Horomi Pass is renowned for its lavender gardens, which typically burst into vibrant purple hues during July. The garden boasts around 8,000 lavender plants, creating a picturesque scene that draws many visitors seeking beautiful photo opportunities. Instagram+2 While the lavender is the main attraction, it's important to note that the bloom period is relatively short. Visiting in August means the lavender will likely have been cut, leaving you with the city views but without the signature purple carpet. Reddit

Travelers often describe the sight as breathtaking and a must-see for those visiting Sapporo during the summer. The scent of lavender is also a significant part of the sensory experience. However, some reviews mention that the lavender might not be as extensive or well-maintained as the larger, more famous lavender farms in Furano, which are a considerable distance from Sapporo. Reddit

Navigating the Ascent and Sapporo Views

The journey to Horomi Pass involves a steep drive from the city outskirts, which can be challenging, especially during peak times. Many visitors report significant traffic congestion, turning a short drive into a lengthy ordeal. Reddit This is a key consideration for planning your visit, as it can impact your overall schedule. The pass itself offers a panoramic viewpoint overlooking Sapporo. Unlike higher viewpoints like Mt. Moiwa, Horomi Pass provides a closer, more intimate perspective of the city, blending urban landscapes with the natural beauty of the surrounding hills.

This elevated position makes it an excellent spot for photography, capturing both the sprawling city and, during the right season, the vibrant lavender fields. The accessibility challenges mean that many visitors opt for private transport, leading to the traffic issues. While the views are a significant draw, the limited facilities, particularly the restrooms, are a recurring point of feedback from visitors. Reddit

Visitor Facilities and Expectations

It's crucial for visitors to manage their expectations regarding facilities at Horomi Pass. Reviews consistently highlight that the amenities are very basic. There is one primary restroom and a few portable toilets, which have been described as dirty and lacking proper maintenance. Reddit This is a significant drawback for many, especially families or those planning a longer visit.

Beyond the restrooms, there are no cafes or restaurants on-site. The only commercial establishment is a small shop selling lavender seeds. Reddit Therefore, it's highly recommended to bring your own food, drinks, and any other necessities. This lack of amenities means Horomi Pass is primarily a destination for a short sightseeing trip and photography, rather than a place to spend an entire day leisurely. Reddit
