What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Bear Mountain Sahoro as a unique sanctuary for Hokkaido's brown bears, offering close-up views and educational insights. The bus tour is highly recommended for maximizing sightings, while the observatory provides a thrilling experience. Some find walking trails less fruitful for spotting bears, and the location requires a dedicated trip.
"Interesting place to learn and view the bears of Hokkaido. The staff are passionate about the bears and know them well. The park has a walking route and a bus route. The bus route is pricier but, you'll prob stand a better chance to see the bears as the guide/driver will point them out to you.
The highlight is the bear observatory where there is a huge glass panel and you can watch the bears take a dip in the pool and be fed by the keepers. Quite a nice experience and something different from the usual zoo.
You'll have to drive quite a distance though as it is located at the outskirts of town."

"Apparently the only bear mountain is Japan, we get to see the bears just doing their own things up close!
There are 2 ticket options - walk or walk + bus. We recommend the latter option as the bus driver also tells stories of the park and is very acute in spotting the bears for us. We walk back from the middle point of the park via the sky walkway and cannot find any bears by ourselves."

"More like a sanctuary than a zoo, which is a plus. The bears have plenty of space. The staff members seem to treat them humanely. Good hospitality. Come support this place if you can."

Understanding the Bear Sanctuary
The park emphasizes humane treatment and allows the bears to move freely within their large, naturalistic enclosures. Visitors can learn about the individual bears, as a guide book often provides their descriptions and names, making the experience more personal and educational.
This sanctuary model offers a responsible way for the public to observe these powerful creatures up close, understanding their behavior and the importance of conservation efforts. It's a chance to see just how large and potentially dangerous these animals are, safely from within the park's viewing areas.
Navigating Bear Sightings: Bus vs. Walk
This guided approach significantly increases your chances of seeing multiple bears, as the bus navigates through their territory. In contrast, the walking routes, including the elevated sky walkway, offer a more immersive experience in nature. However, visitors often report that spotting bears on foot can be more challenging and relies more on luck.
While walking allows for a closer connection to the environment, if your primary goal is to maximize bear sightings, the bus tour is generally considered the more reliable option. Some visitors opt for a combination, taking the bus to key viewing areas and then walking back, though this still requires some luck for further sightings.
