"This temple is said to have been founded in the Heian period. Its principal image is Amida Buddha. It was originally called Josenji Temple, but when Tokugawa Iemitsu visited here on a falconry expedition, he fell ill and rested at the temple. The monk, Kokai, who was there at the time, recommended the water from the well on the temple grounds, and Iemitsu recovered. Iemitsu was so pleased with this that he renamed the well water "Chomei-sui" (longevity water), and the temple's name was changed to Chomei-ji Temple. The grounds feature a restored Chomei-sui well and a monument bearing a haiku by Basho: "Isa sareba yukimi ni koro fu tokoro made" ("Isasareba yukimi ni koro fu tokoro made").
This temple is famous for its sakura mochi (cherry blossom rice cakes), and there is a nearby shop called "Yamamotoya" that sells them. I haven't tried them yet. This temple is also home to the Sumida River Seven Lucky Gods (Benzaiten)."

The Legend of Chomei-sui

Chomeiji Temple's most captivating story revolves around the Chomei-sui well. Legend has it that during the Edo period, Tokugawa Iemitsu, the third shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate, fell ill while on a falconry expedition. He was resting at the temple when the monk Kokai recommended the water from the well on the grounds. Upon drinking it, Iemitsu miraculously recovered. Deeply impressed, he bestowed the name 'Chomei-sui' (longevity water) upon the well, and subsequently, the temple itself was renamed Chomeiji Temple. This tale imbues the well with a sense of historical mystique and is a significant draw for visitors seeking a connection to Japan's past. Reddit

Today, visitors can still see the restored Chomei-sui well and a monument inscribed with a haiku by the renowned poet Matsuo Basho, further cementing the site's cultural importance. The story of the healing water adds a layer of enchantment to the temple, making it more than just a place of worship but a site steeped in legend and historical anecdote. Reddit

Sakura Mochi: A Taste of Spring

Chomeiji Temple is famously associated with sakura mochi, a traditional Japanese confection that embodies the essence of spring. This delightful treat consists of sweet red bean paste (anko) encased in a soft, chewy rice cake (mochi) and is traditionally wrapped in a salted cherry blossom leaf. The leaf not only imparts a subtle, unique flavor but also adds a beautiful visual element, making sakura mochi a feast for both the eyes and the palate. Reddit

Near the temple, shops like Yamamotoya are celebrated for their exquisite sakura mochi. Visitors often describe the taste as unlike anything they've experienced before, highlighting the delicate balance of sweetness from the mochi and anko, complemented by the fragrant, slightly salty notes of the cherry blossom leaf. Reddit The experience of enjoying sakura mochi, especially when purchased from a local shop and savored in the temple's tranquil surroundings, is a quintessential part of visiting Chomeiji. It's a culinary experience that deeply connects visitors to the local culture and seasonal traditions. Reddit
