What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Kurobe Cable Car for its unique engineering and the thrilling, steep incline. The surrounding Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is lauded for its breathtaking seasonal scenery and diverse transportation. However, some find the tunnel sections lack views and the cable cars can be uncomfortably crowded during peak times.
"Not really a hanging cable car, but running on rails. It seems rather powerful to pull two fully loaded cars up such a steep incline (> HK). As it leaves almost every half hourly, It fitted quite a large queue of people with some standing as all the seats were taken up (standing is allowed as it is very stable on rails) There is no scenery as it is all inside a tunnel at 1455m high, much like Disneyland / underground mine ride. The incline can be up to 30deg so its so steep that the 'walkway' inside the cars are high steps, so not so suitable for wheelchairs :P There's are toilets, cafe and dining at Kurobedaira station to enjoy at 1828m! "The 1.3km journey between Tateyama Station and Bijodaira takes seven minutes, with an elevation difference of approximately 500m, and the dynamic scenery of the transition from lowland forest to mountain forest unfolds before your eyes.
Two cable cars use a bucket system to go up and down the slope, which has an average gradient of 24 degrees.
Along the way, there are places where you can see columnar joints, where rocks form pillars.

"This is a cable car that connects Kurobe Lake Station and Kurobedaira Station.
There is no scenery as you go through the tunnel, but when you use Kurobe Lake Station, you feel a sense of excitement like in an RPG because it is a station inside a cave.
At Kurobe Lake, you can check the availability of Hotel Tateyama for the day. What would you do if you wanted to stay there that day and there was no availability? I wondered (lol).
Just like Kurobe Dam, I thought that the people of the Showa era who dug the tunnel for the station, dug a steep tunnel for the cable car, and brought the cable car were truly great.
It felt like the pinnacle of guts and spirit, which are now considered taboo. (Of course, there is probably more to it than that...)
Anyway, I think it is thanks to the great work of our predecessors that we are able to travel like this today."

The entire route can take a full day to traverse, especially if you plan to stop and enjoy the scenery at various points. Some travelers spend multiple days exploring the region.

🎫 🏞️ Onsite Experience
The cable car between Tateyama Station and Bijodaira offers dynamic views of changing forests. The section between Kurobedaira and Kurobe Lake is a tunnel, offering a unique, almost RPG-like experience.
The cable car has steep inclines and high steps inside the cars, making it less suitable for wheelchairs. Some sections of the Alpine Route may have better accessibility.
Kurobedaira Station, located at 1828m, offers toilets, a cafe, and dining options. It's a good place to rest and enjoy the mountain views.
Kurobe Dam is a massive arch dam and a significant feature of the Alpine Route. You can walk across it and witness the impressive water release during certain times.
During spring (typically April to June), the route features towering snow walls, some reaching up to 20 meters high, created by clearing the roads.
📸 📸 Photography
While the tunnel section offers little for photos, the Tateyama Cable Car segment provides views of forests. The surrounding Alpine Route offers stunning mountain vistas, especially from Murodo and Kurobe Dam.
Autumn offers vibrant foliage, while spring showcases the dramatic snow walls. Summer provides lush greenery. Each season offers unique photographic opportunities.
Yes, you can take photos from inside the cable car, but the views might be partially obstructed by the windows or the angle of the incline.
A wide-angle lens is great for landscapes, and a telephoto lens can be useful for capturing distant peaks. A sturdy tripod is recommended for low-light conditions or long exposures.
Generally, photography is allowed, but always be mindful of other passengers and avoid using flash in enclosed spaces or sensitive areas.
