What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Hiroshige Museum of Art Oe Yamagata for its impressive collection of ukiyo-e prints and insightful explanations of the art form's creation. The museum's compact size makes it an easily manageable visit, and the allowance of photography in some areas is appreciated. Its location in Tendo Onsen and the on-site cafe add to the overall pleasant experience.
"It was a truly impressive museum. It was my first time to take my time and appreciate ukiyo-e prints.
Some of the works were even allowed to be photographed.
Nowadays they are considered works of art, but back then they were a medium for quickly capturing the latest trends, but the process leading up to their creation is an accumulation of artisanal skill.
A good painting can't be created without the cooperation of the publisher, artist, carver, and printer.
I think it's about B5 to A4 size. The space is more compact than I expected, but the colors are matched to the intricate brushwork...I'm impressed by the incredible thought that went into it.
I really enjoyed looking around."

"The last time I came to Tendo it was under renovation so I couldn't see it, but this time I was finally able to see it.
There are various exhibition themes throughout the year, and this time it was "What is Ukiyo-e?" and explained how ukiyo-e is made, which was enjoyable.
I also recommend the natural food store and cafe on the first floor.
The entire building seems to be run by the nearby Matsunoyu inn, which is a wonderful initiative from a long-established inn."

"This is a museum dedicated to Utagawa Hiroshige (Ando Shigeemon) located in the center of the hot spring town of Tendo.
The first floor has a cafe and souvenir shop, and the second floor is the museum.
According to the museum curator, at the time, the Oda clan, a direct descendant of Oda Nobunaga's son Nobuo, ruled Tendo, and Utagawa Hiroshige was the official painter.
You can see works from that era as well as works by successive Hiroshiges (and their disciples).
As is typical of modern museums, it was nice that some of the museum was open for photography.
It's a small museum, so you can finish looking around in about 30 minutes at the earliest. (The size of two small halls)
Other things not related to Hiroshige are on display outside the paid area, such as Japanese swords."
