What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Kawayu Onsen offers a truly unique and hands-on hot spring experience with its natural riverbed baths. Visitors appreciate the ability to dig their own pools and the magical steam that rises from the river, especially in cooler weather. While some feel the town's development efforts are a bit unpolished, the natural beauty and the free, tattoo-friendly access make it a worthwhile stop.
"I came to Kawayu Onsen for the first time in several years, and it seems that some kind of consultant or regional development has been brought in, and the whole of Kawayu Onsen has been given a boost. I think this area is one example of that, but it felt a bit half-baked. Or like some project was abandoned midway. Specifically, this Yunokawa River was extremely difficult to walk through. It was also difficult to find access to the foot bath. There are signs that they have put in effort, but it seems like they are just missing the mark. However, it is one of Hokkaido's most popular hot spring resorts with good spring water quality and is blessed with many tourist attractions, so I hope they will do their best."

"This is a stream where Kawayu Onsen water flows into, including the footbath, so it is warm even in the downstream area.
The steam created a very nice atmosphere."

"I visited for the first time to see the Taiho Memorial Museum. The main street is short and you can easily walk around the town. As it is a hot spring resort, it must have been bustling with people in the past. I was comforted by the smile of the young lady at the cafe in the visitor center, and I was able to enjoy the hot spring at the hotel while waiting for the bus. [2020,11]"

The Unique River Bathing Experience
The process is simple yet deeply satisfying. Armed with a shovel (sometimes available for rent or purchase nearby), you find a suitable spot, dig down, and wait for the hot water to surface. The temperature of the natural spring water can be as high as 73°C, but the mixing with the river water typically brings it to a comfortable bathing temperature of around 43°C. This hands-on approach makes Kawayu Onsen a unique and memorable destination for those seeking an authentic Japanese hot spring experience.
It's important to note that the riverbed can be uneven, so wearing sturdy footwear is recommended.
