What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Lake Utonai Sanctuary for its excellent birdwatching opportunities and serene natural beauty, especially its convenient location near New Chitose Airport. The visitor center's resources and helpful staff are frequently highlighted. Some find the noise from passing aircraft disruptive, and the limited public transport and visitor center hours require careful planning.
"Before taking the ferry to Oarai, we visited Lake Utonai Sanctuary. We had three hours to explore this place, which looked promising for birdwatching.
The visitor center was great. It had a few huge binoculars and scopes pointed at the lake, books about local birds, a mini-exhibition, and various bird-related supplies for sale. The area and the protection of Lake Utonai are under the management of the Wild Bird Society of Japan.
The lakeside path consists mostly of wooden walkways that branch off to visit different areas. At the end of one path, there was an excellent high wooden viewing hide, and we were the only ones there to use it. We climbed in absolute darkness and opened the thin windows to see the immensity of the lake. Excellent place to spend long minutes birdwatching!
We could see many Taiga Bean-Geese, Whooper Swans, an Osprey, and even a White-tailed Eagle!
There was only one thing that interrupted the tranquility of the place: at perfectly regular intervals, a deafening roar echoed throughout the wetland. Lake Utonai is 10 km from the New Chitose airport, and a plane landed there every two minutes. How does this affect all the wildlife?"

"The winter scenery is superb, and we were lucky enough to spot many different birds, including a flock of Shima enaga! Thank you so much to the workers at the centre who were super helpful and pointed out where to look for the birds we were interested in :)"

"A tranquil walk through the mostly untouched forest rewards you with scenic views of the lake surrounded by tall grains. Did not manage to encounter any animals, but still an enjoyable unplug from Chitose city."
