"A nice shrine with insert style goshuin in the office behind the little Fuji mountain. Be aware they close for lunch from 12pm to 1pm but the staff are very nice and it's a quiet little shrine. It is quite a walk from Ikebukuro Station however."

"very quiet and calm atmosphere in the grounds of shrines approached via a long stone paved path"

"After my favorite solo activity in Ikebukuro last weekend, I headed to Ikebukuro Hikawa Shrine. ⛩️

About a 25-minute walk from the west exit of JR Ikebukuro Station, this shrine is also located in a residential area, away from the hustle and bustle of the surrounding area. 💡

Passing through the first torii gate, I was greeted by lush greenery, resembling a row of cherry blossoms, making me want to visit during the cherry blossom season. 🌸

After passing through the second torii gate and entering the grounds, I turned my attention to the stone monument on the right, engraved with the enshrined deity and history of the shrine.

I then prayed at the beautiful main hall, praying for prosperity in my work, one of the blessings offered by the shrine. 🙏

After praying, I noticed a spot in the grounds that particularly caught my eye. Visiting the Ikebukuro Fujizuka 🗻

When I received my goshuin (temple seal), I asked the shrine maiden about this mound, which has a rock🪨 from Mt. Fuji embedded in it...

Although it's normally off-limits, you can climb it on July 1st, the same day as the opening of the mountain, and it's said to bring the same blessings as reaching the summit🌅

As someone who has climbed Mt. Fuji in the past🗻 and conquered the four major climbing routes, I was excited to hear about it❗️

Ikebukuro Hikawa Shrine made me want to visit again on July 1st😊

Please note that the goshuin is not written directly in the notebook, but is left in writing📖"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Significance of the Fujizuka

One of the most unique features of Otsuka Hikawa Shrine is its Fujizuka, a miniature replica of Mount Fuji. These mounds were popular during the Edo period as a way for people who couldn't travel to the actual mountain to still experience its spiritual significance. Climbing the Fujizuka was believed to grant the same blessings as reaching the summit of the real Mt. Fuji. Reddit

At Otsuka Hikawa Shrine, the Fujizuka is particularly special as it has a rock embedded from Mt. Fuji itself. While usually off-limits, it's possible to climb it on July 1st, coinciding with the official opening of the mountain climbing season in Japan. This offers a rare opportunity for visitors to partake in this traditional pilgrimage. Reddit :mountain_fuji:

A Glimpse into History

Otsuka Hikawa Shrine boasts a long and rich history, with theories suggesting its origins date back to the Sengoku period. Archaeological evidence, including pottery from the Jomon period, has been found in the vicinity, indicating a long-standing spiritual presence in the area. The shrine was a significant site for Fuji-ko (Fuji cults) during the Edo period, highlighting its importance in local religious practices. Reddit

Although the original shrine building was lost during the Tokyo air raids of World War II, the current structure was rebuilt in 1965. Despite the modern reconstruction, the shrine retains its historical essence, serving as the guardian deity of the former Ikebukuro village. The long stone-paved approach and the presence of the Fujizuka are testaments to its enduring legacy. Reddit

The Goshuin Experience

For many visitors, collecting goshuin (temple seals) is an integral part of visiting Japanese shrines and temples. Otsuka Hikawa Shrine offers unique insert-style goshuin, which are a beautiful memento of your visit. These seals are typically obtained from the shrine office, which is located behind the main shrine building. Reddit

It's important to note that the goshuin at Otsuka Hikawa Shrine are not written directly into your goshuincho (seal notebook). Instead, they are provided as pre-printed inserts. Remember to check the office's operating hours, as they observe a lunch break from 12 PM to 1 PM. Reddit :scroll:
