"The instructor gave my family's very clear instructions to make paper. Our instructor was very kind and guided us throughout the process. He also showed us the ventures of japanese paper. The special orgagami exhibit was very cool and my kids enjoyed folding origami. I would highly recommend coming with family and friends."

Thomas Fok

"It was a great experience to make a lampshade with washi paper (Japanese traditional paper)!
Where I come from we do not have a culture of making paper like this.

The staff were so helpful and gave us detailed directions of how to make washi.

Using small pieces of colorful papers, you can decorate the washi you made as you wish. It looks so beautiful when you put the light source at the center.

Not only the craft experience but you can also visit the museum right next to the area and learn about many things related to washi making, including history, ingredients, other artists' craft, etc...

You must experience Washi making here when you come to Tottori/Japan!
So recommended!"

Craig Sheppard

"It was a wonderful experience for the three of us from Canada and one of the highlights in Tottori Prefecture. We were able to make the paper from pulp water to final print with our own designs with a variety of paper and dye. Highly recommend. Well worth the time and money! Next time we are in the area, will definitely visit again."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Art of Washi Paper Making

Washi, traditional Japanese paper, is renowned for its durability, beauty, and versatility. Unlike Western paper, washi is typically made from the inner bark of trees like the mulberry, kozo, or mitsumata. The process involves meticulous steps, from harvesting and steaming the bark to beating it into a pulp and then forming thin sheets using a fine screen. This labor-intensive method results in paper that is both strong and delicate, with a unique texture and translucency. Reddit

At Aoya Washi Studio, visitors get a hands-on experience with this ancient craft. You'll learn to mix the kozo pulp with water and then skillfully use a sugeta (a wooden frame with a bamboo screen) to lift and form the paper. The ability to add your own decorative elements, such as colorful paper scraps or dyes, allows for a truly personalized creation. This interactive approach makes the traditional art form accessible and enjoyable for everyone, from young children to adults. Reddit+1

The resulting handmade paper is not just a souvenir; it's a piece of art that can be used for various purposes, from calligraphy and printing to crafting lampshades and decorative items. The studio also showcases the historical significance and diverse applications of washi through its museum exhibits, offering a deeper appreciation for this cultural heritage. Reddit
