What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Saikan Mount Haguro offers a deeply spiritual and authentic temple lodging experience, praised for its incredible traditional monk cuisine and serene mountain setting. While some find the rooms minimalist and the building can be noisy with groups, the unique cultural immersion and proximity to sacred sites make it a worthwhile stay for those seeking more than just a hotel.
"Rooms are very minimalist with only a on floor "bed", towel, and kimono. It was pleasant to have it right off the trail ( staircase). Rooms have sliding doors that open to other peoples rooms. Quite open plan."

"The food was amazing and the view is great! My friends and I drove to the Saikan parking lot and took the bus down and hiked back up.
It took like an hour and a half. There were a lot of mosquitoes considering that it’s summer, but, was able to survive with only 4 bites, despite around 10 following me up the hike, with regular sprays of repellant.
We arrived just in time for dinner but the people gave us time to eat after we had a bath. The bath was clean and quite large. The temperature was perfect (for me and my friend at least). Then had an amazing dinner. Definitely worth the price."

"Chef Ito-san prepared a meal for me and my small group for a lesson on Shojin Ryori, which is the traditional cuisine prepared for the monks when training here in the maintain. It was a great meal, only made better by a short tour of the mountain and the abundant food offerings given by the mountain itself. I left feeling fulfilled and energized."
