Hiking very near Almaty, need advice on my plan

Akbulak to Kok-Jailau is rather some 5 km, it's your typical one-day thing (advertised by local guides as "for beginners and non-experienced trekkers"). You might want getting there as you suggested (bus or taxi to AkBulak, walk up/west to Kok-Jailau), but then turning north…

Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the stunning natural beauty of Kok-Zhailau, with its vast green landscapes and distant snow-capped mountains creating a fairy-tale atmosphere. The opportunity to see horses grazing freely is a major draw. While the hike can be challenging with steep sections, the rewarding views and the overall adventure make it a highly recommended destination for both hikers and mountain bikers.

"I had my first mountain biking experience here. With beautiful green landscapes stretching as far as the eye can see, you can also catch glimpses of snow-capped mountains simultaneously. Horses grazing and playing around added to the feeling of being in a fairy tale.

Falling on snowy trails and in muddy puddles while biking definitely left some memorable moments! 😅 If I lived in Almaty, I'd want to come here at least once a month."

"Simply splendid, if you manage to get up countless steep steps during the first 1/3 of the hike. There are no streams on the way to to the plateau but a few on top. Since it is an active horse grazing pasture one better use water filter when getting water from the streams up there to avoid stomach issues. Bus #12 brings you from the city for 25-50 cents, depending if you pay by Onay card/app or cash. Get off at Aq Bulak stop."

"Beautiful trek, takes about 2-3 hours to reach the top."
