What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Lake Natron is lauded as an amazing and scenic destination, offering a starkly different experience from other parts of Tanzania. Visitors are captivated by the pink waters and the spectacle of thousands of flamingos. However, some travelers have found the guiding services to be expensive and lacking in value, with additional hidden costs for permits.
"Amazing place! It was worth long driving. Totally different from other places in Tanzania."
Lorenas Sakalas
"Scenic place, false hospitality. My family travelled to Lake Natron without a guide, as we rented a self-drive safari car. Upon arrival, we were told that the lake and its surroundings can only be visited by paying for a guide, a weak service which cost us $20 per person. We were told this included entry and guidance around 3 sights, and the permit entries to these. Nonetheless, the guide only offered surface-level information and later announced that the permits (local and central entrance taxes) were ultimately not included in the price, and thus need to be paid on top to the authorities. This cost us an additional $35 per person, which made the one night we spent at the location for my family incredibly expensive for little experience. We left wondering whether it is only a few individuals acting as guides benefitting from tourism in the area, while the local community is left out of its benefits."

The Science Behind Lake Natron's 'Stone' Animals
While this environment is deadly for many creatures, it is precisely what makes Lake Natron a vital sanctuary for lesser flamingos. These birds have evolved unique adaptations to tolerate the high alkalinity and saline conditions. The lake's waters are rich in the blue-green algae and diatoms that form the base of the flamingos' diet, and the harsh conditions deter predators that would otherwise threaten their nesting grounds. This creates a fascinating paradox: a lake of death for some, and a life-sustaining haven for others.
Photographer Nick Brandt famously captured the haunting beauty of these calcified animals, highlighting the lake's surreal and almost mythical quality. His work has brought international attention to this natural wonder, showcasing the stark contrast between the preserved remains and the vibrant life of the flamingos.
Planning Your Lake Natron Safari

Some lodges offer unique experiences, such as cultural interactions with the Maasai community, adding another layer to the visit.
