Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Hill of Witches for its unique artistic sculptures and the enchanting forest walk, calling it a must-visit on the Curonian Spit. The free entry and ample parking are appreciated, though some note the trail isn't wheelchair accessible and suggest getting an explanatory book for deeper insight into the folklore.

"Great little hike for everyone, not wheelchair accessible but not really strenuous. There are a few short uphill stretches, just have good shoes on. It’s in a forest so lots of shade. The art makes for great pictures.

Don’t start at the bus stop; you should go through a few houses and souvenir shops before starting, and in the shops you can buy an explanatory book covering all the sculptures meanings. If you start the trail right at the bus stop, you are going backwards (not that that detracts from the experience!). Highly recommended! Free and open 24/7."

Rick

"In this woodland park there are many artists' interpretations of characters found in local legend and folklore. This outdoor museum has been around for more than 40yr. and as a UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the most visited attractions in Lithuania."

Bruce Wessel

"Nice mile plus walk to see cool wood carvings made during the soviet era depicting witches and demons (and some dragons). It is apparently where the local wigans used party (for hundreds of years), i suspect with a few funny mushrooms."

The Folklore Behind the Figures

The Hill of Witches (Raganų kalnas) is more than just an art installation; it's a vibrant testament to Lithuania's rich folklore and mythology. This exhibition evolved into the captivating outdoor museum we see today, featuring over 80 wooden sculptures carved by various artists. InstagramReddit

Each sculpture tells a story, bringing to life characters from Lithuanian fairy tales and legends. You'll encounter figures like the Laumė (woodland fairy), depicted as a kind witch, and various devils and mythical beings. The trail is designed to immerse visitors in these narratives, with the wider, brighter paths showcasing well-known figures, while the narrower, darker sections reveal the more mysterious and sometimes eerie characters.
