Reviews Summary

The Kuala Kedah Ferry Jetty is a functional departure point for Langkawi, offering a generally clean and organized terminal experience. Travelers appreciate the comfortable, air-conditioned ferries and the scenic 90-minute journey. However, some visitors have noted issues with cramped seating, inconsistent cleanliness, and negative interactions with locals, particularly regarding parking scams and customer service. Reddit

"Instead of flying to Langkawi, we took the ferry and departed from this terminal. The neighborhood is like a construction area, but the terminal itself is clean and relativ good organized. The day we came to the terminal it was not so crowded and also the ferry itself was not full at all (probably 40% utilized). We did not buy tickets on the ground as we had bought online already back in our home country. But if you travel on a not very busy day you can buy tickets directly on the ground at the ticket office. Tourists pay also slightly higher price compared to locals. The waiting area was in good shape and clean. Toilets available were clean. There is no air conditioning, only ventilators were installed which was fine.

I believe that with the construction around the terminal finalized the complete area will have a better atmosphere, but might take more time.

Soon after the ferry ready for boarding, the process itself was well managed.

The ferry’s are in good shape and seem to be well maintained as well. The a/c in the ferry’s are working very well, so well that I had to wear my fleece jacket.

It took us around 90 minutes to get to Langkawi. Sea level was kind of windy and water splashing against the windows with the ferry going up and down was kind of fun to me.

We did not regret having decided to take the ferry instead of traveling via plane. It was a good experience and I can strongly recommend this travel option to Langkawi."

Ali T

"The ferry was old and dirty, seats never been cleaned before. Second floor wasn't accesible but all the seats looked brand new. Also, legroom was so small, we felt like on a low cost plane."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Navigating the Kuala Kedah Ferry Jetty Experience

The Kuala Kedah Ferry Jetty serves as a crucial gateway for travelers heading to the popular island of Langkawi. While the immediate vicinity might be a construction zone, the terminal itself is generally well-organized and clean, offering a functional space for passengers. Visitors often note that the waiting areas are in good shape, and essential facilities like toilets are available and maintained. The primary purpose of visiting this jetty is to embark on the ferry journey, which is a scenic and often enjoyable way to reach Langkawi. Reddit

Travelers have highlighted that the ferries themselves are typically in good condition and well-maintained, featuring effective air conditioning that can be quite strong, so bringing a light jacket is a good idea. The journey duration is approximately 90 minutes, and the experience can be quite pleasant, even with some wind and water splashing against the windows. This ferry option is frequently recommended as a worthwhile alternative to flying, offering a good travel experience. Reddit

However, it's important to be aware of potential issues. Some reviews mention that the ferry seats might feel cramped, similar to a low-cost airline, and that cleanliness can be inconsistent. A significant concern raised by some visitors is the behavior of certain locals, particularly regarding parking scams where exorbitant fees are charged. Additionally, there have been reports of unhelpful or rude customer service from staff, especially concerning the use of facilities like prayer rooms. Reddit

Ferry vs. Flight to Langkawi

For those planning a trip to Langkawi, the choice between a ferry and a flight is a common consideration. Ferries depart from two main terminals: Kuala Kedah and Kuala Perlis. The journey from Kuala Kedah to Langkawi typically takes around 90 minutes. This option is often favored by travelers seeking a more scenic and relaxed experience, allowing them to enjoy the sea breeze and views. Reddit

Flights, on the other hand, offer a quicker transit time, usually around 30-45 minutes from Penang or Kuala Lumpur. However, this speed comes at a higher cost and bypasses the coastal scenery. Many travelers find the ferry experience to be a good value, especially when considering the overall travel experience and cost-effectiveness. The ferries are generally equipped with air conditioning, making the journey comfortable even in warm weather. Reddit

When deciding, consider your priorities: speed and convenience versus a more immersive and potentially budget-friendly journey. For many, the ferry from Kuala Kedah provides a memorable start to their Langkawi adventure, offering a different perspective than air travel. Reddit
