I've visited all 36 public museums in Selangor and KL, here's a tier list from best to worst museums in the region:

What does the tier means? * 3-star: HIGHLY recommended to everyone. This is how museums should look like * 2-star: Good enough that I will bring my family here * 1-star: Passable, recommended ONLY if you're a museum nerd * Just skip: Terrible museum curation or building…

Worthwhile museums in KL

I'll be travelling to KL and Penang in August. While in KL, I'd like to add a museum to my itinerary, especially if it is raining or I want to beat the heat for a bit. Are there any good museusm in KL worth a visit? I like art and history. Not into natural history or kiddie…

Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Royal Museum for its opulent displays and historical significance, offering a fascinating glimpse into Malaysia's royal heritage. The beautifully maintained gardens are a particular highlight, providing a serene escape. Some find certain exhibits less engaging, and occasional crowd management could be improved during peak times.

"Sure! Here's a review of Istana Negara (the National Palace of Malaysia) written in smooth, natural English without subtitles:

Istana Negara is a magnificent symbol of Malaysia’s monarchy and a must-see landmark for anyone interested in the country’s culture and history. Located in Kuala Lumpur, the palace serves as the official residence of the King of Malaysia (Yang di-Pertuan Agong). Even though visitors cannot enter the palace itself, the exterior view is grand and majestic.

The palace grounds are well maintained, with beautiful gardens, golden domes, and traditional Islamic architecture that reflects both Malay heritage and modern design. The main gate is a popular photo spot, especially during the changing of the guard ceremony, which is reminiscent of royal ceremonies in other parts of the world. The royal guards, dressed in traditional uniforms, add to the regal atmosphere.

There’s also a Royal Museum section at the older palace (the previous Istana Negara) that is open to the public. It gives visitors a glimpse into the lifestyle, traditions, and responsibilities of Malaysia’s royal family. Inside the museum, the royal chambers, formal halls, and official regalia are preserved with great care and offer fascinating insight into the country’s constitutional monarchy.

While the new Istana Negara is more of a viewing experience from the outside, it still leaves a strong impression of national pride, dignity, and tradition. It’s a peaceful place to visit, take photos, and reflect on Malaysia’s unique system of governance and royal culture.

Overall, Istana Negara stands as a symbol of unity and respect in Malaysia, and it’s well worth including in any Kuala Lumpur sightseeing plan."

"Nice place to learn about how the royals lived and their history. Expect to spend approx 1 hour here. RM10 for adult foreigner. Don't miss out the museum on the side of the main building next to where the washrooms are. This is a much better to visit than the National Palace. The buildings have strong AC, very comfortable to walk around."

Jason Wu

"Istana Negara is the official residence of the monarch of Malaysia. A lot of tourists are visiting this place even though it is not allowed to roam inside. However, you can take photos outside the palace gate and witness the changing of the guard ceremony, which takes place daily."
