What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Sipadan is a diver's paradise with world-class marine life, particularly at South Point and Barracuda Point. Visitors praise the incredible biodiversity, from schooling fish to turtles and sharks. However, some reviews mention concerns about dive equipment safety and the impact of day-trippers on resort ambiance.
"Our all time favorite place to come, stay, dive, eat and be happy. The service is excellent and welcoming, food is always tasty and the diving is world class with great dive guides. We have had the same dive guides since 1999 and he is the king of macro, Jasni. This time we also went XR diving with back mount twins and deco50's to some of our fav dive sites with more gas and more time! When you dive here, that's what you need more time and more gas because all the amazing macro and pelagics are found here. I can't begin to describe all the amazing critters we discover here. It's truly paradise that we will continue coming to SMART. Thank you for taking great care of us always on each visit.
We event find need marine life each time. So again thank you for providing another memorable experience for us."

"We stayed on the landsite in one of the bungalows and had the best time. The rooms are located right by the beach, which is perfect for morning/evening walks and the free buggy-service to the water bungalows was seamless and quick. For what you get at staying at the resort (3 dives/snorkel trips a day and unlimited shore dives), it‘s absolutely a great resort with very friendly staff and amazing service."

"This resort is run down and mostly closed, it looked to be a wonderful scuba resort once upon a time ! The over water Bungalows are beautiful as is the scenery. Food is very average and be ready to dodge the hundreds of tourists that get boated over for the day to take selfies at the resort! The dive crew and diving itself was outstanding though. Diving at sipadan island is world class, and worth the other grumbles."

Some resorts also provide unlimited shore diving or snorkeling opportunities, allowing families to explore at their own pace. The boat rides to dive sites can also be an adventure in themselves. It's advisable to choose a resort that caters to families and offers a good balance of activities for both divers and non-divers.

The Legendary Sipadan Dive Experience
Beyond the famous vortexes, Sipadan boasts dramatic underwater topography, including the Sipadan Wall, which plunges over 600 meters. This creates a unique environment for both reef-dwelling creatures and open-ocean wanderers. Expect to see numerous sea turtles, reef sharks, eagle rays, and a dazzling array of corals and reef fish. The macro life is equally impressive, with divers often spotting unique nudibranchs, mating mandarinfish, and other small wonders.
It's important to note that Sipadan is a protected marine park, and access is strictly controlled by permits. This ensures the preservation of its delicate ecosystem. While the diving is world-class, some visitors have reported issues with dive equipment quality at certain operators, so choosing a reputable dive center is paramount for a safe and enjoyable experience.
Navigating Sipadan's Currents and Conditions
Visibility at Sipadan is generally excellent, often exceeding 20-30 meters, especially during the dry season. However, strong currents can sometimes stir up sediment, temporarily reducing visibility. The water temperature is consistently warm, typically around 28-30°C (82-86°F), making it comfortable for extended dives.
For those concerned about strong currents, sites like Coral Garden or areas around Mabul might offer calmer alternatives. However, for the iconic Sipadan experience, being prepared for currents is part of the adventure. Always listen to your dive briefing and follow your guide's instructions.
