Hike a Playa Colomitos, Madagascar y Playa Caballo.

Reviews Summary

This coastal trail offers breathtaking scenery and rewarding beach destinations, but hikers should be prepared for challenging, rugged terrain with some hazardous sections. While many find the adventure exhilarating, others caution about the trail's condition and recommend water taxis as an alternative.

"This trail is worth it. Some sketchy bits but not bad at all. To give you an idea my 5 year old did it, granted we hike a lot at home so he's used to it.

This hike has amazing beaches you cross, and the ending at Las Animas is worth it!"

Josh vanden Eykel

"This trail is in terrible shape and an accident waiting to happen. It needs some strong reconstructive work through the forest as handrails are down in places, its hand over hand up and down some parts that are eroded out completely. I've done other hikes and they're beautiful, this was excruciating. Never again. Next time I catch a boat right to colomitos and back."

Rhon Magyar

"This is the second part of the trail system that goes south in the jungle from Boca.
After you reach Colomitos Cove there is red brick steps that take you up to the trail to Las Animas. Some of the steps are gone from time and tide but still reachable. They are close to the water opposite where you come down from the trail from Boca.
After you reach the stairs that take you up there will be another choice, the trail splits. The one to the right will take you parallel above the beach occasionally bringing you down to enjoy the beach again. The other trail takes you up to the ridge. This is a more physically demanding trail that will get you wondering if you should do the easier trail.
Keep at it you'll see more birds on the higher trail and once you crest the top it is all down hill. If you get off the trail and it happens back track and look again this is a clear trail the whole of it. Some parts are marked but not as well as it could be. When the trail ties back to the lower trail someone has marked it with red tape around a wire separating the two. Just step over and you are back on the lower trail that takes you to Las Animas."

Navigating the Trail: From Boca to Las Ánimas

The Colomitos Las Ánimas Coastal Trail is a spectacular jungle hike that connects Boca de Tomatlán to the popular Playa Las Ánimas. The journey begins in Boca de Tomatlán, a small fishing village south of Puerto Vallarta. From here, you can either embark on the full hike or opt for a water taxi to Colomitos Cove to shorten the trek. Both routes eventually converge, leading you towards the vibrant Playa Las Ánimas. Reddit

Real traveler experiences highlight the rewarding nature of this hike, with many finding the effort well worth the stunning scenery and the eventual arrival at Las Ánimas. However, some reviews caution about the trail's condition, noting hazards like exposed rebar and low-hanging barb wire, emphasizing the need for sturdy footwear and constant awareness. TikTokReddit

The Water Taxi Advantage

For those seeking a more relaxed experience or with limited time, the water taxi is an excellent alternative to hiking the entire Colomitos Las Ánimas Coastal Trail. These colorful boats operate from Boca de Tomatlán and can whisk you away to various points along the coast, including the beautiful Colomitos Cove and the bustling Playa Las Ánimas. TikTok

Taking a water taxi allows you to bypass the more strenuous parts of the hike, making the stunning coastal scenery accessible to a wider range of visitors. Safety and Preparedness

While the Colomitos Las Ánimas Coastal Trail is an incredible adventure, safety and preparedness are paramount.
