Reviews Summary

Visitors find Fuerte de Guadalupe to be a historically significant site with beautiful panoramic views of Puebla. While the museum is noted for being small and primarily in Spanish, the historical context and the commanding vistas make it a worthwhile visit for many.

"Closed for many months (covid), but now open again. The building inside the curtain walls was a church - the original roof is gone and only parts of the walls remain.
A model (see attached photo) shows what it used to look like - it had two church towers; these were deliberately demolished by Zaragosa before the battle of Puebla (May 5, 1862).
Fuerte de Guadalupe is a nice spot even if you don't go in - slightly higher mirador than Loreto. Open daily except Sunday and Monday - 65 pesos."

Jesper Olsen

"Such a beautiful places. Amazing amazing experience. 100% I will be back to Puebla."

Miguel Alvarez

"It is interesting to walk around outside, nicer than Loreta Fort for that, but the museum is smaller as much of the interior is closed and everything is in Spanish whereas Loreta is English and Spanish for most things."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Battle of Puebla and Fuerte de Guadalupe

The Fuerte de Guadalupe is intrinsically linked to one of Mexico's most celebrated historical events: the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. During this pivotal conflict, Mexican forces, despite being outnumbered and outgunned, successfully repelled the invading French army. The fort served as a crucial strategic point on the Cerro de Guadalupe, providing a commanding position for the defenders.

Before the battle, General Ignacio Zaragoza ordered the demolition of the church towers that stood on the hill. This was a tactical decision to prevent the French from using them as elevated firing positions. The museum within the Fuerte de Guadalupe often features models and exhibits that illustrate this historical context, helping visitors visualize the events that unfolded on this very ground. Reddit

Visiting the Fuerte de Guadalupe offers a tangible connection to this significant moment in Mexican history. While much of the original structure has been altered or lost over time, the site remains a powerful reminder of national pride and resilience. The panoramic views from the fort also provide a sense of the strategic advantage it once held. Instagram

Exploring the Museum and Exhibits

The museum housed within the Fuerte de Guadalupe is a compact yet informative space dedicated to the history of the fort and the Battle of Puebla. Visitors can expect to see historical artifacts, period photographs, and detailed explanations of the battle's progression. A standout feature is the miniature battlefield model, which offers a fascinating visual representation of the troop movements and strategic positions during the conflict. Reddit

While the museum's content is primarily in Spanish, the visual aids, particularly the model, can still convey a significant amount of information. For those who speak Spanish, the exhibits provide a deeper understanding of the fort's role and the bravery of the soldiers. The staff are often noted for their helpfulness and willingness to explain the displays. Reddit

Beyond the specific battle exhibits, the museum also touches upon the broader history of Puebla and its cultural heritage. The fort itself, with its remaining walls and strategic location, adds to the immersive experience, allowing visitors to step back in time and connect with the past. Instagram

Panoramic Views and Surrounding Area

One of the most compelling aspects of visiting Fuerte de Guadalupe is the breathtaking panoramic view it offers of Puebla city. Perched on the Cerro de Guadalupe, the fort provides an elevated vantage point that allows visitors to take in the sprawling urban landscape, the iconic churches, and the surrounding natural beauty. This viewpoint is often considered superior to that of the nearby Fuerte de Loreto. Reddit

The area surrounding the fort is also pleasant for a stroll. While the museum might be small, the opportunity to walk around the exterior of the fort and enjoy the open spaces adds to the overall experience. It's a great spot for reflection and appreciating the historical significance of the location. Reddit

For those looking for additional nearby attractions, the Laguna de San Baltazar is mentioned as a nearby spot that offers a different kind of natural escape, accessible for a small fee. TikTok
