Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about Atzompa Archaeological Zone for its stunning architecture, breathtaking views, and remarkably uncrowded atmosphere. Many appreciate the free admission and the opportunity to connect with history without the usual tourist hustle. However, some note the challenges with transportation and the need for sun protection due to the exposed site.

"Amazing architecture. Similar to those in Yucatan as far as size. Lots of walking and you're able to stand on and touch the buildings. Be prepared for the sun and lots of steep steps. Definitely recommend!"

Troy Folse

"Thought to be where Zapotec nobility lived. Not Mont Alban but worth a visit as it is empty of other people and the views are stunning. Difficult to get to and can be very difficult to leave -- be sure you have a plan for a taxi to pick you up."

Johntony

"A real unexpected find. This recently reopened counterpart to Monte Alban is smaller but also WAY less crowded at under 50 visitors per day on average. We took a taxi from downtown Oaxaca and back for 500 pesos, the site itself is admission free. Ride up takes about 30 minutes. The site has great views, good signage and is very relaxed without the vendors and tour groups. If you have some time this is a really nice morning spent off the beaten track."
