Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Njegoš Mausoleum for its breathtaking panoramic views and its significance as a national monument. The climb up the 461 steps, many through a tunnel, is considered a memorable part of the experience. However, some find the entrance fees for both the park and the mausoleum to be a bit high, and parking can be challenging during peak times.

"A Magical spot. Highly recommended. Before going up the stairs in the tunnel you will be met by a guard who tends to guess prices. In the end we only paid for two adults at 8eur each. Also note that this Mausoleum is located in a national park where you will have to pay 3eur for each adult before driving up. We parked in the road just a few meters down the restaurant located beneath the tunnel stairs. During peak visiting hours it might be difficult and hard to maneuver for driving. We visited the Mausoleum from 1815 to 1915 on a Sunday. The viewpoint can only be accessible by going through the tunnel stairs and Mausoleum."

"Don't miss this place. Beautiful place in the beautiful nature of Lovćen park.
Entrance to the park 3€, entrance to the mausoleum 8€
After 460 steps through the cool tunnel, you can see beautiful views from the hill. Also the mausoleum is very nice. Really a tribute."

Zuzana

"The mausoleum is located on the top of a mountain in Lovcen National Park. If you go by car, you will have to first pay for the entrance to the national park which is 8 EUR per vehicle. And the entrance for going up to the mausoleum on top is 8 EUR per person, which you can buy from a small ticket counter after the first leg of the stairs.

Is the view beautiful? YES. But there are A LOT of stairs, and there is no toilet up there, so keep this in mind. Wear comfortable footwear, bring enough fluids, and empty your bladder before going up. The restaurant at the bottom of the stairs has a restroom for 1 EUR.

The way down is not as bad as the way up. And most of the stairs are actually inside a tunnel up, so it is cooler inside on a hot scorching day. On top, you will get a 360° view of Lovcen National Park with its mountain peaks around and some settlements in between."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Legacy of Petar II Petrović-Njegoš

The Njegoš Mausoleum is more than just a tomb; it's a national monument dedicated to Petar II Petrović-Njegoš, a pivotal figure in Montenegrin history. He was a prince-bishop, poet, philosopher, and statesman who significantly shaped Montenegro's identity in the 19th century. His writings and leadership are deeply revered, making this site a place of pilgrimage and national pride. Instagram+1

The decision to build his final resting place on Jezerski Vrh, the second-highest peak of Mount Lovćen, was his own wish. The current mausoleum, designed by renowned sculptor Ivan Meštrović, replaced an older chapel and was completed in 1974. It stands as a testament to his enduring legacy and the country's appreciation for his contributions. Instagram

Visitors often feel a profound connection to Montenegro's history and culture upon visiting. The sheer scale of the monument and its dramatic setting underscore the importance of Njegoš to the nation. It's a place that invites reflection on Montenegro's past and its resilient spirit. Reddit

Experiencing the Ascent and Views

The journey to the Njegoš Mausoleum is an experience in itself, marked by the iconic 461 steps. Many of these steps are carved into a tunnel, offering a cool respite from the sun and a unique atmosphere. The climb, while physically demanding, is often described as rewarding, with anticipation building with each step. InstagramReddit

Upon emerging from the tunnel, visitors are greeted by the imposing structure of the mausoleum and, more importantly, the breathtaking panoramic views. From this vantage point at 1,657 meters, you can see vast swathes of Montenegro, including mountain ranges, valleys, and distant settlements. It's a truly awe-inspiring sight that photographers and nature lovers alike will cherish. InstagramReddit

Travelers recommend taking your time on the ascent and descent, pausing to soak in the scenery. The contrast between the cool, enclosed tunnel and the expansive, open views at the summit is striking. Many visitors find the panoramic vistas to be the highlight of their visit, even more so than the mausoleum itself. Reddit

Practicalities: Fees, Parking, and Amenities

Planning your visit to Njegoš Mausoleum involves understanding the associated costs and logistics. There are typically two main fees: an entrance fee for Lovćen National Park, which can range from 3 to 8 EUR per vehicle, and a separate entrance fee for the Mausoleum itself, usually around 8 EUR per person. It's wise to confirm these prices upon arrival as they can fluctuate. InstagramReddit

Parking can be a challenge, especially during peak tourist seasons. Visitors often find success by arriving early in the morning or by parking a short distance down the road from the main entrance, near the restaurant. This might involve a brief walk, but it can save you the hassle of searching for a spot closer to the stairs. Reddit

Regarding amenities, the most crucial point is the lack of restrooms at the summit. Visitors are strongly advised to use the facilities at the restaurant located at the base of the stairs before beginning their climb. Bringing ample water is also essential, particularly during warmer months. Reddit
