What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Hikers rave about the absolutely stunning 360° views from the summit of Vrmac Ridge, calling it a must-do for its panoramic beauty of Kotor Bay and Tivat. The opportunity to encounter local wildlife adds a unique charm to the trek. However, some find the trails quite rocky and steep, emphasizing the need for proper footwear and preparation.
"We opted to hike Vrmac Ridge from the fort to the summit rather than the more common Old Kotor to fort route. We drove to the pinned location and parked near a small farm. A heads-up: upon arrival you’ll be greeted by farm animals — two friendly dogs and plenty of curious pigs that may wander over to say hello.
Once you leave the farm, the trail to the summit takes about 1.5 hours. It’s extremely rocky and covered with loose pebbles, so good hiking shoes are a must. We left Old Kotor at around 6:30 AM, catching the sunrise on our ascent — a perfect choice in summer for cooler temperatures and softer light. Along the way, we stopped for photos and even came across some cows grazing.
The route passes the fort, which we chose not to explore this time. As you approach the summit, the payoff is incredible: a massive Montenegro flag waves proudly at the top, with jaw-dropping 360° views. One side offers a full panorama of Kotor Bay, including Old Kotor, while the other looks out toward Tivat — you can even spot the airport.
The descent is much quicker, but equally scenic. Overall, a beautiful, peaceful hike that combines rugged terrain, local charm, and unforgettable views. Highly recommended if you want a different perspective of the Bay of Kotor.

"We really loved the Vrmac ridge hike, we love wildlife and there was so much of it! We walked the main route and took some detours on separate routes which don't seem to be walled as much to find undisturbed wildlife. We spotted a lot of glass lizards (which look like snakes) 1 tortoise, loads of lizards, butterflies and some dungbeetles. We also saw one adder when searching in one of the clearings but it went into the bushes before we could get a photo"

"From Mount Vrmac It is very interesting to look at Boka from different angles, from a bird's eye view. There are a lot of climbs, you can find Pješačka staza in almost every village on the peninsula. The highest point is Sveti Ilija Peak (785m). Vrmac above the coast (at the bottom there will be Stoliv and Prčanj) and leads to Tvrđava Vrmac (fortress). By the way, the fortress can be reached by an asphalt road from Kotor.
Wear comfortable shoes for hiking in the mountain.,Be sure to take a sunscreen, a hat, something to eat and a sufficient supply of water (there is a spring in Gornja Lastva and a well on a small semi-abandoned farm near Tvrđava Vrmac), and camera to take breathtaking photos, and most importantly - a good mood ! Have a great trip!"
