Praskvica Monastery. ⛪️🕊 This ancient monastery, Praskvica, is located near the highway running along the coast of Montenegro, between the towns of Budva and Petrovac, near Przno and Sveti Stefan. It is a very atmospheric place and the road itself along the Budva Riviera is very beautiful. #monastery #praskvica #praskvicamonastery #christians #architectures #ancient #montenegro #crnagora

History and Legends of Praskvica Monastery

Praskvica Monastery boasts a long and storied past, with evidence suggesting a church existed on its site as early as the 11th century. The current structure largely dates back to the 15th century, with the main church believed to have been built by Balsa III in 1413. The monastery has endured significant historical events, including being ravaged and its books burned by Napoleon Bonaparte's army. A devastating earthquake in 1979 also caused damage, necessitating rebuilding efforts, as evidenced by numbers on the octagonal dome. Reddit

One of the most captivating legends associated with Praskvica is that of Monk Yegor Stroganov. It is said that over a decade, he single-handedly constructed a remarkable series of staircases leading from the sea all the way up to the monastery. This feat of endurance and devotion is a testament to the deep spiritual connection people have had with this sacred site. Visitors are encouraged to ask Father Dimitri, a resident monk, to share this incredible story firsthand. Reddit
